I have been using hot lamps with some of my studio work and would like to use external flash units such as the Alien Bees. My E-300 has what they call a PC Socket. Could I hook to the external flash through this connection point without using a hotshoe adapter?

If it's a round doohickey that looks sorta like a headphone jack, then yes.

If it's just what they call the port the cable to your PC goes to, no.

I suspect the latter is the case as the two reviews of the E-300 I just glanced at say it does *not* have a PC (flash) connector.

The hotshoe adapters work fine. Make sure your strobes use low-voltage syncing, or else get an adapter cable with a supressor in it.

The PC connection on your camera is for hooking it up to a PC or a printer. Doesn't look like this camera can fire external strobes (except if you have the strobe fire when the internal flash fires, make sure you don't have red eye operational)..

You can connect the camera directly to a computer or printer with the provided
USB cable. If you specify the device you are connecting to beforehand, you can
skip the USB connection setting procedure normally required every time you
connect the cable to the camera. For details on how to connect the camera to
either device, refer to Chapter 9 “Printing (~P. 137) and Chapter 10
“Connecting the camera to a computer (~P. 163).
AUTO : You are required to select PC or PRINT in the USB connection menu
every time you connect the cable to a computer or printer.
STORAGE : Allows USB connection to a PC and transfer of data to the PC. Also,
select to use the OLYMPUS master software via PC connection.
CONTROL : Allows you to control the camera from a PC using the optional
OLYMPUS Studio.
PRINT : Allows you to connect the camera to a PictBridge-compatible printer.
Pictures can be printed directly without using a PC. ~“Connecting
the camera to a printer (P. 147)

You do need to use a hot shoe adapter, or you could use a wireless remote system from the hot shoe as well.

Good luck

I use the E-300. You'll need either a hot shoe adapter or a radio or infrared wireless sync system to trigger the strobes. The pop-up flash cannot be used to trigger slave units because it fires a pre-flash in all flash modes, not just red-eye reduction.

Good luck!
