Seems there is an incompatibility issue.

I came across this item on DPREVIEW: Sigma Confirm issue with Nikon D200

The links shows the positive side of things. Sigma freely admits the problem and makes a move to fix it. I use the Sigma 70-200 2.8 DG HSM EX on my Canon 20D and it does work in all modes. I've had really good success with Sigma lens overall.
Cheers,
rfs

And with most any camera, but they won't admit that.. ;-)

Put a Nikon on your Nikon!

Problem solved..

Come on...You know usually I agree with you, but every time I see you blindly bashing Sigma it really pisses me off.

Maybe if you could write an "I hate everything but Canon" post and send it to one of the mods, they could make it a sticky on every board here and we wouldn't have to read you bitching about anything other than Canon all over the place.

There's no f'ing way that I'll ever buy another overpriced, under-engineered Nikkor lens again after having identical results with lenses that work better and cost less.

They'll pry my Sigmas from my cold dead hands.

All the people that say they've had problems with them are experiencing things that I've not once, in three years, three bodies and over 500,000 captures on each body using the same lenses, experienced (that would be over 1.5 million captures, the majority of them shared between two lenses).

So YOU have a bad experience. So your BUDDY had a bad experience. Write it off and get over it. Doesn't mean they're all crap.

And those of you that call Sigma a "third party manufacturer" remember that they build a very fine camera system as well.

Ok....not here, but in PM, I'll give you the e-mail of my friend Dan, who used to own the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM lens...it kept causing problems with his 10D body...and so he had to have it "rechipped".. BTW, Sigma doesn't exactly offer a professional service like Canon or Nikon does... he ended up waiting 4 months for his lens to be rechipped.. While he was waiting for this seamingly endless process, he ended up buying a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L lens,..and guess what..? No problems..and you can ask him yourself if he noticed any differance between the two lenses.. I won't speak for others.

Marc Grant..He shot with the 70-200mm f2.8L lens..until it broke... and (I'm not sure if he still is,..or not)... but had to shoot with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM lens...please,...ask Marc what his opinions are of that lens, compared to that "every bit as good as" Canon counterpart..

Scott Story...shoots with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM lens... Ask him if he is satisfied with his lens buying ddecision to save a few bucks..

I personally shot with Sigma lenses early on in my career... They sucked.

No,...Nikon, Olympus, Minolta, Pentax also make great glass.. I personally owned a bunch of Minolta glass, and the "glass" it's self was fine..the lenses sucked.. I have worked with Nikon glass.. the 80-200mm f2.8 AFS lens... which is a very nice lens..both optically and mechanically.. I have owned Mamiya..Sekor(sp?) glass for my RB67 system...they were "O.K." comparred to Hasselblad's Carl Zeiss lenses.. My friend Mark uses a Sony digital camera... I hate the camera,...I think it's a major P.O.S., but the lens is a Carl Zeiss,...and is F'ing beautiful! Sharp as all heck..

So,...please don't toss me into this catagory that I hate all stuff other than Canon..

I used to own a Tamron 300mm f2.8.. I thought it was fantastic until I first shot with my Canon 300mm f2.8 L lens... I suddenly hated my Tamron lens..

This new Sigma 300mm f2.8 DG lens (specially designed for use with digital cameras) sells for about a thousand or more LESS than the Canon or Nikon counterpart.. Why would that be? Where are they cutting the corners..? BTW,..Off brand lenses have more mark-up on them than brand named lenses do,...so,...selling price is much more than cost price.. Do you believe they are as reliable as their counterparts..? Well,....FTR, Sigma is the LEAST compatible among all the off brand lenses.. Tamron ranks highest.. Why doesn't every major or minor publication I know of use Sigma lenses with their Canon or Nikon cameras, with the excaption of the 14mm f2.8 / f3.5 lenses which were available for the Nikon mount back before Nikon offered a 14mm f2.8 lens in their line? Just think of all the money they could save, outfitting every staff photographer with lenses that cost up to half as much!

BTW, I am looking into picking up a Contax 21mm lens...which is an "off brand" lens,...and manual focus too... I can buy an adapter made by Bob Shell,..and use it on my Canons...because my Canon near counterpart sucks horrible ass...the 20mm f2.8 is one of the worst primes I have ever used...next to the 14mm f2.8 L..I really wonder if a Sigma 14mm would be any better than that god awful thing.. I hear their 20mm f1.8 is slightly better than Canon's 20mm f2.8,... but I want something significantly better..even if it costs me 3k.

Well,...you know,....if it gives you great results that you are happy with, and someone will have to pry those Sigma lenses out of your hands after you are dead,....LOL.... then I guess you are going to continue to shoot with them regardless of what I and or others say about them......that doesn't matter to me,...but I won't change my position on that either......nope..

BTW,...from what I've seen,...Sigma lenses are pretty good, but they don't add up..

That 300mm Sigma I was referring to a sec ago... it doesn't offer Auto Focus Preset...it doesn't offer up three different MF speeds..? Why not..? Do you just use AF when shooting your sports..? Heck, I use MF about half the time..it's nice to have control of how far the turn of the ring will cover the field...especially when shooting away subjects, where AF sensors get more "confused" out there between subject and background..

Like I said my friend,... I don't hate everything but Canon.. Hence the reason why I suggested to the OP,..."Put a Nikon on your Nikon"..

Unfortunately, they didn't test every lens every system made,...but they tested a LOT of them...see for yourself how they add up:

I'll stand down, and let the test results stand out.

Just want to take a moment and clarify (after a PM or two from a few different people) that my first post here was not meant as an attack or slam on JP. In fact, I re-read it later, and went to edit a couple of elements, and missed the "allowed edit time limit."

Oh well - let the chips fall where they may.
