OK, so I finally got my new laptop up and running (Sony Vaio FJ series) and all seems to be working just fine, except for this annoying feature where holding the mouse over an action button for a few seconds, activates that button, even if I don't click the keypad to execute the action. I know this is a standard feature on laptops, but its driving me nuts. Is there a common command, or place to look for the place that turns this off? Or at least what its called so I can find it in the Sony help system?

Thanks & Happy New Year!

Andy,
are you talking about the pressure pad or a mouse ? I know some laptops have a place to adjust the curser next to the clock. check all the little icons next to the clock. You might also want to go into "control panel" and see if there is an icon called mouse settings. To get to control panel go to the start button and then on the list that comes up look for control panel. click it and then look for "mouse".

Andy, my mom just got a laptop for Christmas, and it reminded me of why I don't like the mouse pads, they are always too small, or my hands are too big, either way, there is a solution for my problem, and it could very well be for yours as well. I recommend getting a wireless optical mouse for your laptop. I have one for my desktop, and love it. The one I have is made by Microsoft, it actually works great, and for a laptop, you can easily install one, and it won't take up much room and that way you won't have to change any settings much past your mouse controls.

Not sure of the exact problem based on your description.
Your Sony has a touchpad. If you have an external mouse handy, connect it and see if you still have the problem while using the external mouse. If this changes the issue then try reducing the sensitivity of the touchpad and or watching carefully for palm contacts (if you don’t have another mouse try changing the sensitivity anyway)

Another possible issue is the single click versus double click setting under folder options.

I don't know the new Vaios but surely there's a control panel option under 'mouse', 'touchpad' or a Sony specific control app. That would make me crazy.

Start, Control Panel...
Printer & other hardware...
Mouse...

There should be an option to turn off auto-select or something like that.

Andy

Consider a trackball or other external mouse - those pads are a pain. My brother in law has a new Sony similar to yours and it had a mind of it's own!

Its not the pad, its simply that having the mouse pointer linger on an action button activates that button. That's all I want to stop - I want to be required to click the left mouse button to do something, not have it do it on its own if I get distracted for a second.

It's your active desktop. It's set so that the items in the Explorer Window launch when you pass over them (being treated like html items). I have a Vaio here and went through the same hassles with it.
