Okay Clint and Richie! You guys (at least) have the new Canon 10D. Don't tell how great it is -- tell us about the camera and SHOW US some imges! Heck you've had the things for at least a week! Tell us what you like and if there's anything you DON'T like!

Thanks!

sorry but my grandfather has been in the hospital, and I have spent most of my time there in the evenings. I hope to really play with it today and sunday to get some stuff for you guys to see.

Here is my initial take on the camera:

The exposure latitude is great, I have rarely had any problems with blowout when using the 420Ex flash. I also like being able to stop up/down by 2 stops the 420 within the camera flash exposure menu.

I didn't have a D60 so wether or not the AF is better I can't compare.

The adjustable white balance in 100k increments is really nice. I played with it yesterday and this is what I got: The one on the right is at 4800k, the left at 5600k. lit buy window light only and 400 ISO. They are straight from the camera, PSed for size.

Even without the grip the 10D is very well balanced,

I didnt buy the grip when I ordered but I wish I would have now. The battery life seems kinda weak in my opinion. I got a 1 gig Microdrive, so that might be a little bit more drain than the Compact flash.

Going to have some prints made on monday of what I shoot this weekend so more review to follow

RJ, I've had limited time with mine as well, but now it is spring break and I have all week. I do have some samples of ISO 200, 400, and 800 up at http://www.phototalk.net/rryerson

ISO 400 is very clean - you can see this by looing at the image of the cat in my 10D sample gallery. If you click the medium image, a full-resolution version will load in your browser. The images in the gallery are straight from the camera. They were shot as fine JPGs in Adobe RGB colorspace. You cannot specify parameters for the Adobe RGB colorspace like you can with sRGB. In other words, there is no sharpening on these images in-camera or otherwise.

My main complaint about Canon's DSLR systems, that I wasn't aware of until I purchased one, is the lack of TTL flash metering. I have a Sunpak PZ5000AF flash that works great with my Canon film bodies, but TTL is useless on the 10D - I've also read reports that Sigma's E-TTL flashes are useless too. Looks like I'll have to upgrade to the E-TTL 550EX if I need consistant output. I can use the automatic thyristor flash on my Sunpak, but it does require some trial and error - the wedding image in the gallery was using the Sunpak in automatic mode.

I did buy the grip for my camera and it helps balance out the heavier lenses like my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX HSM. I have one Canon battery and one Digi-Power clone and together shot over 450 images in the span of two days without the power meter dropping. I did alot of previewing on the LCD too.

Canon also added a backlighted LCD on top of the camera this time! It's an orange/amber colored light.

One more plug, I bought a Transcend 30x 256MB CF card from http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com for $70 and a PCMCIA type-II reader for my notebook for $18. Shipping was $7.50 for next-day service via FedEx. It was my first order from this company, and I will order from them again when I need more CF cards. The Transcend 30x is noticably faster than my Lexar 12x.

Hope this is some of what you are looking for RJ

Here is an image from image straight from the 10D and resized by Phototalk:

This is a 100% crop from a portion of the image. Minor levels tweaking and USM were added via Photoshop 7.0.

I would try to borrow or rent the 550ex before buying it. I previously had a Canon D60 with the 550ex and quite frankly was very disappointed. The E-TTL system with the D60 was definitely not a good combo. Your always either pressing the FEL on the camera or you have to worry about what color is under the focal point. If its the focal point was over something black the images would overexpose. If the focal point was over something white the image would be underexposed. Way too much for me to have to worry about when trying to do candids. I would hope they did a better job with the D10 using the 550ex.

E-TTL supposedly fixed....

Your pic seems pretty normal to me when I was shooting with the D60 and the 550ex (underexposed). Try taking a picture where you intentionally have the focus point no either a very dark or very light color.

Marc

Since you have that lawyerly talent with words we expect you to write a pretty good review of the camera! And since you have an AWESOME model in house with you -- we expect "illustrations" with that review!

Nothing like a little expectation setting to raise the bar!
