I've been volunteered to do some filming for the local cable outlet and the guy sponsoring this deal is going to provide a camera.
I need to give him a recommendation in a good miniDV camera for less than about $800.
I know squat about video cameras.
Any suggestions here would be appreciated.

Without knowing whether you'll be shooting in studio or on location, whether size is important, whether you need a good zoom or not, etc. it's hard to make a recommendation. But as a starting point, Consumer Reports rates the JVC DF450 the highest of any Mini-DV (which is what you want, for sure) camcorder. $395

As for brands, I'd stick to Canon, Sony, Panasonic, or JVC as first choices. But checkout http://www.dvspot.com for reviews.

Have fun shopping!

thanks for the help.

I'll be shooting city meetings, because I'm already covering them for the paper. But since it'll be in my posession I'll probably wind up using it for other stuff too, so I want a good general purpose camera.

you didn't indicate if you needed a single chip or 3 chip camera. It does make a difference.

I use the canon gl2.
