Hey Everyone!

I will be traveling to the Carribean (specifically the DR) in January and was thinking of taking my camera along. I am worried about it being lost/stolen/confiscated/etc and was wondering if there was a way to insure it for say a week or something? I'm relatively new at this, so I am open to your experienced advice. Where could I find something like "traveler's insurance" for my camera? Are the policies generally fully comprehensive? How much can they cost? Thank you!!!

Check your homeowner's insurance, it may cover it. Alternatively, credit cards sometimes cover these items when the trip was purchased with their card or they offer extra travel insurance. Standard insurance companies won't write 1 week policies.

Enjoy the DR.

If you have a policy covering your domicile (homeowner's or renter's insurance), contact your agent and tell them what you want to do. Basic policies typically cover up to ~$2500 and only pay out if the equipment is damaged due to fire/water/??? while in the home. Dropping or breakage is not typically covered by a basic policy.

What you're basically looking for is a specific rider to cover you photo equipment. You will most likely have to provide serial numbers (and possibly photos) for every item you wish to cover. Additionally, the coverage usually has to be in place for 30 days in order for you to file a claim. Costs typically run anywhere from 0.5% to 3% of your equipment's value annually.

(in Oregon) Your homeowner's policy WILL NOT cover your camera (or anything else) if it's not IN YOUR HOUSE. Not just on your property, but *in* your house or a structure attached to it with direct access (like the front porch). I recently found this out the hard way.

Now when I travel I take my US Customs inventory list of my gear to my insurance agent and buy a term comprehensive policy for it for replacement value (to the poster that said that they don't do this, you didn't ask - insurance companies will figure out any way they can to allow you to give them your money). That coupled with a personal liability policy for the term is usually a couple hundred dollars for $15k (new) worth of equipment for two weeks. They'll also want to know where you're going - that may affect the rate.

I own an insurance agency in Colorado. We cover up to 10% of your possessions outside of your home, including outside the country. If you want a lower deductible or more complete coverage on your photog equipment, ask you agent about a special rider. Usually not to expensive and covers things like equipment being dropped, etc.
