Dont bother with RAW unles you are going for advertising quality images. I shoot RAW for paying advertising customers and stock images, almost everything else is shot JPEG fine. As Ken mentioned, processing RAW images will kill your computer speed and storage, and unless you are planning to have images on the sides of a bus, the extra info is not necessary for what you are doing.

RAW is great, but not for everyday shooting. All my model comp cards and general portrait stuff is all shot JPEG fine and I routinely go up to 16X20. The image quality doesnt change in JPEG, the data and how you can play with it does.

RAW images are not any sharper then JPEG, they just are unprocessed files. Honestly, when you shoot RAW, you are betting that you can PS post produce the files better than the camera software can turn them into JPEGS.

Care to take the bet over who is sharper, you or the computer?

Frank,
Can you set a Canon 10D to shoot Raw only? The only setting I see is that you have to include JPG in the RAW file (RAW+JPG)

Thanks, Skip

As far as RAW+JPG goes.. I know a lot of folks like it, saying that it simplifies their ability to sort quickly, etc.

I don't know if the Nikon works the same as Canon, but on Canon's RAW photo, even if you haven't chosen RAW + JPG, you still have a 1.5 megapixel imbedded JPG in the RAW file. So I never do the RAW + JPG, because if I need a fast set of JPGs, I can just do an automatic extraction of them using something like BreezeBrowserPro. Does Nikon's RAW work the same way?
Cheers,
rfs

Roger,

No, Nikon doesn't embed a JPG along with the NEF file unless you tell it to do so.

Scott,

No, I hadn't seen that file - interesting! Looks like my guesstimate was pretty close to what they're saying.

All in all, it looks like we're going to be buying fewer CD's (750 MB fits a 512MB card's shots on it quite nicely) and a lot more DVD's!

The 10D alwasy imbeds a JPG, but gives you the choice of its size.
The 20D always imbeds a fixed size JPG when you choose RAW. If you choose RAW+JPG, then it creates a second file, JPG, of the size you choose. So on 10D, you get one file only, no matter what you choose, and on 20D, you can get two files, one RAW, and one JPG. But you still get an imbedded JPG in the RAW because that is what is used for the LCD preview.
Cheers,
rfs

Maybe you haven't seen this one either. It's the 24 page glossy marketing blurb on the new D200.
