For on locations shootings I am looking for light modifiers. The handling should be easy and the modifier should be "transportable".

Does anybody uses umbrellas? Or might be a very smal softbox a good choice? ( found a 15" x 21" one). Or an

Most light modifiers are portable, so I wouldn't let that slow you down. Nearly any umbrella will collapse smaller than the stand you'll mount your light on...so there's no worry there. Soft boxes collapse, too. I would say that your lights and stands are much more of a concern, relative to portability, than the modifiers.

However, the environment could play a roll there. If you're shooting on the beach, an umbrella could be a really bad choice. What do you mean by "on location?"

"Light Modifier" is a very broad term indeed. A multi-thousand dollar bank of softboxen is a light modifier. If I hold my hand up to block part of the flash output from my on-camera strobe, my hand is a light modifier. And there's anything in between.

Do you want stuff you put on a flash head of some sort, or do you want stuff to modify ambient light or light from a preset source? I like my Calumet ZipDiscs, which are compact reflector discs with various reversible surfaces. (I have the fancy ones which can be gold, silver, white, or black and can also be used as shades in direct sunlight.)

Alien Bees makes a "poor man's" softbox that works well on location. It's basically a shoot thru umbrella with a skirt that tightens up around the flash head. Since the underside of the umbrella is covered, it's less prone to catch wind. I use it all the time for wedding formals.

Other than that, just about the only thing I haven't used outside is my 60" softlighter. All manner of reflectors and softboxes will work. Just depends on what kind of light you want.

I did, however, manage to allow one of my AB lights to catch wind with the beauty dish and crash to the pavement. Bent the hell out of my beauty dish and sent the light to the factory for repairs. Get some sandbags to weight down your lightstands.
