Andy,

I've had a 20d since they first came out. The only camera shake problems I've had are self induced (shooting too slow for the lense length.) If the sensor in his camera shakes, something is broken. The sensor doesn't just float around in the camera.

EOS 20d, 2 seconds @ f2.8, ISO 100, Tamron 28-75 XR Di

This images is a 2 second exposure and in the full size pic you can read the house number on the front of the house. This was done on a tripod, no cable release and no mirror lock-up.

If you're friend has issues as described he might be better off to send it to canon for service.

There may be "pro features" on the 20D body, but it isn't considered an actual "pro camera". It is well featured, but as I read the forums on dpreview,... I constantly see people crying about how their 1500.00 camera doesn't perform exactly like, or even better than 4-8 thousand dollar cameras..

The mirror slap is not as noticable on the 1D series cameras. I'd go as far to say that the sound of the shutter in contunous is easier on the ears than the 20D's.. The 20D is not a bad camera, but it isn't everything either..It's a lot better than my D30,...and much metter than my 10D..

One thing,... by this time, after owning the 20D bodies for a year now, I would have had to send them in for new shutters because of the heavy use they get from me.. Well, the shutters in the 20D bodies are much better & stronger now, and show no sign of wear, or need for replacement, unlike every "Elan" class digital camera before.. (D30, & 10D bodies)..

I agree, you want pro features, you pay the pro prices. I just don't think "less camera shake" falls under the category of "pro feature". Its like buying a car and expecting the wheels won't fall off, even on the budget model. Its a pretty basic attribute of the car (or camera).

As for the shutter, I don't know how many exposures they're rated for (does anyone?), but another friend just has his 20D shutter replaced at about 50,000 shots (or so Canon told him, he thinks that's low). I seem to recall my film cameras getting a lot more than that. That's only 1400 rolls of 36 exp film, and as I'm sure I've gotten a lot more than that out of my F100 Nikon.

Digital Camera are still very much in their infancy, my gosh the D30 with its 3 megaPixel and 1.6 crop factor cost (when new $2800) nearly as much as your 5D. Yet when it came out you could get a used full frame film camera for a couple a hundred bucks, film camera had thirty-some-odd years of refinements, so their differences are huge and not always "what you'd expect"...

As for my 1D mkII, ok, it's overkill, but there are people plodding along in their Ford Taurus that think haveing a Beemer is overkill...
