In my small studio I have been using several purchased materials from a fabric store. I have one in black, but when I see the finished product it has a brown hue to it. Material or lighting? Any suggestions please? By the way I spent last week in N.O. helping with the Katrina victims. Should have some shots to share soon.

What's your white balance set on? We use a black background too and when we inadvertantly shot it on Auto White Balance it turned out VERY blue. Other than that you might want to remember the 90% rule - black still reflects 10% of the light hitting it. Might want to make more of an exposure gap between your subject and that black background. If we shoot the subject at f/8 we make sure the black background meters no hotter than f/5.6

I'm going to have to blame the lighting in this case. Black still reflects light, not much, but some. Things aren't that bad, it's easy enough to get a black balance in Photoshop.

Materals not designed for photo BG's may have dyes or phospors (?) that react differently to flash than the eye sees, especially if the flash emits high UV.
I use Photec' Background in a bag andit always is Black and soaks up light like a sponge
