i dunno why my computer's doing what it's doing but when i load images into a folder and i click on one of them---one of them that's now a thumbnail--it's using Internet Explorer as the picture viewer rather than 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer' and the IE image viewer sucks!!!! i'm thinking it's a setting somewhere but i don't have a clue where. anyone got any ideas?

Right-click on your image file
In the sub-menu, select OPEN WITH...
Then a little window appears, down there CHOOSE PROGRAM...
SELECT WINDOWS PICTURE AND FAX VIEWER
and check ALWAYS USE SELECTED PROGRAM...

sounds so simple. but, unfortunately, when i right-click an image file i don't get the "open with" option in the sub-menu. i'm using windows xp pro, btw.

here's what i do get:

open
explore
search
refresh thumbnail
sharing and security
(some rar and zip file optons)
send to
cut
copy
create shortcut
delete
rename
properties

Select "Properties", then change "Opens with:" to your program of choice. For example, I use Photoshop. You might have to change this for all file extentions (.GIF, .JPG, etc.)

on some platforms you can hold down the shift key while you right click on the image file and then you will get the " open with " option. The strange thing that make no sense is how it was changed in the first place ?

Usually the installation/removal or update of a program that thinks it owns the world and should change your defaults for you causes that, very annoying but some folks think they know how you should use your computer. Windows Media Player or IE itself are rather annoying in that way, it's usually a tiny checkbox that you'll miss when clicking 'next next next' to get through all the stuff.

open the folder, and right click on the picture. Click on open with and go to the bottom and click choose program.

When the window open up, choose windows picture and fax viewier and put a check in the box for always open with this program...should solve your problem.
