Ok, so my girlfriend and I were at this corn maze yesterday, and I wanted to get a good overhead shot of the whole maze. She thought the nearby tree might make a good vantage point, so she volunteered to climb it and find out. I handed her the camera, safely tucked away in its padded Tamrac over-the-shoulder pouch. Her judgement in climbing technique is not always the best, and she grabbed onto a dead branch that let go and she fell a good six feet to the ground. The resulting shock did a number on the Rebel, which is just over a year old (thanks GPCB for the great deal, really!). I actually got it to fire up briefly, even took a picture. It appears as if the problem is around the memory card door sensor, because while it was fired up, wiggling the door killed it again. Now I can't get it to power up again. My dilemma is this: the electronics technician in me is telling me to break out the jeweler's screwdrivers and go to it. The common sense side of me is telling me to just send it back to Canon and take the safe route. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

This is my girlfriend. How could anyone be mad at her?

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!

If the warranty is still going strong for you, go with the Canon repair and don't tinker. If you need another receipt or anything let me know.

If the warranty is gone, depending on the extent of the damage it could be tinker time or recycle.

Canon rebates kicked in on the 15th through the rest of the year, Rebel XT on the list with a bunch of other goodies.

Sorry to hear about it, but girlfriends don't usually have warranties and she looks like a keeper

For the record, similar scenario, I let my girlfriend go up on a tree to take a shot, she fell,....the camera was a minolta x-700...so it was fine, but the grief i got, sheesh "this stupid camera is so metally (yeah its a word) that when I feel on it I think im going to get a big bruise now!"

....ah, if stories like that don't keep film cameras going, I don't know what will...metally....cameras still working being falled upon my attractive women....good times

Well, I bought it about 14 months ago. I don't do extended warranties, so I'm assuming it's out. I'm sure I have the receipt around somewhere, but I didn't figure it would do me any good anyway. Still pondering my options...

Hey, gimme a break! Actually, while it was kinda comical to watch, I didn't laugh at her because I truly was worried she was hurt. The first thing she said was, "You'd better check out your camera." I told her I was sure it was fine, and never even opened the case. She nagged me about it until we got back to the car, when I finally checked it out and found it wouldn't power up. She was actually puzzled that I didn't laugh at her when she fell!

Like Jason said, if the warranty is still valid, get factory servicing. The most I'd do is remove the batteries and try as full a reset as possible. It's worked with a couple of malfunctioning calculators, an ADC evaluation board, and an LC pump, but I've never tried a camera.

IF AND ONLY IF the warranty is expired, then open 'er up and have at it - what've you got to lose under those circumstances? You probably know the drill better than I - careful inspection first, look for failures, disconnects.

Er, homeowners' policy? Rider?

Good luck, Michael.

Well, homeowner's is the first thing that entered my mind. Then I started thinking... hmm... Rebel XT?... 20D?... Might be a good time to upgrade. I haven't given up that idea yet. I'm sure the warranty is up, since they only come with a one-year and it's been 14 months since I bought it. And I thought of the hard reset, too; but oddly, cameras don't have one. Now, where are those jeweler's screwdrivers...

Yeah, yeah... I knew it was just a matter of time before some smartass would try to tell me metal is better...

Actually, I'm not yet convinced of that. Besides, I consider these bodies disposable anyway; this time next year, I'll be wanting the next new thing Canon comes out with...
