My trusty old Stylus Photo 870 has started to spit out a tiny drop of black ink each time the print head changes direction.

I had done a thorough cleaning earlier today and replaced the ink cartridges, and then tried to print a CD label -- well, the picture didn't look bad, but it was surrounded by a halo of black dots, one arc two inches to the left of the image, and a second arc down the right side of the image. And the dots are smearing, dragging fine lines of black ink across the image.

Anyone ever seen / fixed this problem, or is the printer toast? Thanks in advance for any input.

Take a tissue and clean the plastic arms that stick out underneath the carriadge. You must remove the ink cartridge first. Sounds like ink has built up on the arms under the carriadge.

I bought an 870 just after they came out. Mine started doing similar bad things about two months ago. I cleaned everything; nothing helped, so it is now retired. The good news is that I picked up an $89 R200 just to use for junk printing, but I found that it prints great photographs, much better than the 870. I now use it for my "casual" prints, reserving the 2400 for the production work.

I have an 870 at the office (it's about one year younger) that is still holding on. I really got my $$ out of those printers.

After consulting a few fix-your-own-printer web pages, I've fixed the problem, at least for today : )

The problem was excess ink not draining properly from the parking station, which I've blotted out with a folded paper towel. Well, with six or eight paper towels, actually. And I'm getting a bottle of Epson head cleaner to loosen the clotted ink up on that parking mesh.

Then of course, my print heads were totally junked up, so following web advice -- hey, they're never wrong, lol -- I hit the button to unpark the heads for a cartridge change and imediately pulled the power card as soon as they moved from park. Then I took a half sheet of paper towel folded several times, put it in the bottom channel and pulled the print heads over it. Talk about dirty!

But the good news is that the print heads apparently haven't ben ruined, and the iimages are printing fine once more. Now don't try this at home -- I figure if I had folded the towels one more time, the print heads would have been ruined, lol. The instructions did say to set the printer for thick paper if that option exists -- and it didn't.

Thanks to all for the comments,

Lynn
