Hello gang, I'm in the market for a new monitor and would like your opinion as to what to get. A CRT or LCD? What brand and model number?

After buying and trying a LaCie 19" Electron Blue IV (CRT known for image quality), I decided I didn't care for it and sold it. (It worked perfectly, but it was a matter of choice, and has since been discontinued. They also now sell very expensive LCDs). Since I didn't want to spend $2500 for an Eizo, I opted for a Dell 2001FP (20" LCD) and love it. I don't want to bore you with the details, but a color imaging consultant from a pro board I subscribe to recommended it as a third choice behind the Eizo, and an expensive NEC. The Dell was about $550.

Regards,

From experience with my laptop, brightness varies greatly with angle of view. For this reason, and that of cost I'd go CRT. You can get a 20"+ Sony Trinitron for less than $200 I believe.

Lacie is no longer making CRT and the last model is the Electron Blue VI. This is a great monitor but huge and their LCD equivalent is the Lacie 321 LCD which is incredibly good, but the price is $1,600. Since I couldn't justify the cost of it I got myself a 20" Apple Cinema Display.

I've been checking out the LCDs and drooling over the though of having a large sleek flat panel display sitting in front of me (and my clients), but -- since I do a lot of digital design and retouching, I've not found an inexpensive LCD that has good enough image quality. My solution -- I use two 19" CRT monitors and a Matrox G450 dual head card (total price about $300 per monitor, about $125 for the dual head video card). Great image quality, low price and ... a screen area of 38" x 19"

I think you hit it on the head, Marty. I use my laptop's 17" display for image work, my plan is to get a larger display and run dual, using the larger for working with clients. For that display, color accuracy isn't as critical.

Cheers!
