Has anybody else had much of a problem with Canon 10D's and 20D's giving this error message? We have seen it come up on both bodies and ended up realizing that these cameras do not play nice with after-market lenses such as Tamron etc. 3 or 4 of our shooters have bought the Canon/Tamron combination to save a couple bucks and ended up with me having to Next Day a Canon lens to them to make the camera work. I would prefer them to use the Canon glass anyway but having to scramble to save a shoot sucks.

Hmmm well I shoot with two different Tamron Di lenses and have never had the Error 99 problem on my 20D.

I have however had it happen with my Cannon 70-200/2.8

So I'm not sure that glass is the issue, could be though. I've only had it happen a couple times...my assumption was that it was a memory card issue. Everytime it's happened to me, I have to switch out the memory card.

I use a combination of canon and Tamron glass on my 10D. I've never had a problem with the Tamron lenses. Make sure the contacts on the body are clean. The only error 99 I've ever had was when using a Canon 50mm 1.8 found out the contacts on the lens were not making good contact with the contacts on the body. Cleaned them with a pencil eraser and all was well.

I've been using the Tamron 28-200 on my 20D for a lot of shooting (2500+ captures over 2 months) and have had no hiccups. Are they using the Di lenses or the full-frame lenses? Not that I can help, just trying to narrow down the issue.

Canon tech support was the one who clued us in on the lenses not being "as compatible" as a Canon lens would be (go figure). They had us taking the lens off, taking the battery out, putting the battery back in, then putting the lens back on. This fixed the problem a couple times but the real issue seems to be the contacts between lens and camera that everybody has mentioned. Tech support people never even mentioned doing that - odd. Seems like just common sense after hearing it suggested.

If you have a battery grip, check if the grip and the body are held together tight.

I belong to a 20D forum and this problem has come up several times. They have suggested as on this forum clean the contacts, Also if the lens are older than the 20D call the lens manufacturer, they may tell you to send it to them, and they will rechip it. I had to do this with an old Sigma 75-300. I got an err99 msg first time I used it. Called Sigma and was told to send it to them and they worked on it and sent it back, no problem since then. They also did it at no charge
