I have been considering getting a photo printer. Any suggestions on the best printer under $500 that will print at least as large as 8x10? I would also prefer that the ink catridges be independent of each other.

Thanks. Gus

Either a Canon Pixma 8500 (8 seperate tanks, up to 8.5x11, about $350) or the bigger borther i9900 (same tanks, up to 13x19, for $499.99).

i got an older Canon 6-tanker, and it produces awesome pictrues, and it is fast.

The pixma line has some nice printers out now, 8500, 6600, there are some in all ranges really.

Also the Epson R1800, little over $500 right now but rebates kicking in.

Thanks for the input. Like the dye-sub, but concerned about the 301 dpi. I'll check it out some more.

Dye-sublimation is quite a bit different, technology-wise, than ink jet technology. 300 dpi continuous-tone dye-sublimation is at least comparable to the latest crop of ink-jet printers. The vast majority of photo printer-processors you see at your local camera store (and many of the large volume, large format processors too) have a digital output stage that exposes the paper at 300 dpi.

a used Epson 2200 or a new Epson R1800

both produce fine photo prints up to 13 x 19

in fact, this was printed on an Epson, doesn't it look great?

I'd second the r2200 or r1800. I got my r1800 for a steal price and the prints are WOW . The r800 uses the same ink set as the r1800 if you don't need the large format. Check out reviews.
