I am looking at the canon glass and they seem to sell some black lenes and some white lenes. Does that mean anything ? The one lens 70-200mm is white and the 20-70mm is black. Those are the 2 I want. Whats the two colors mean ?

The White Lenses are the L series lenses. They are suppose to be the top quality glass and they are expensive.

Do you know if the 20-70mm 2.8 comes in white ? I am looking for the best glass for both lenes.

Just be conerned with the red pinstripe on the end..those designate "L" lenses.. There are a LOT of L lenses that are not white:

14mm f2.8 L, 16-35mm f2.8 L, 17-40 f4.0 L, 24mm f1.4 L, 35mm f1.4 L, 24-70mm f2.8 L, 24mm f3.5 TS L, 180mm f3.5 Macro L, 135mm 2.0 L, 200mm f2.8 L.. Notice that these are all fairly small lenses..

The white lenses are suppose to deflect the sun's rays more than the black lenses, for lenses that have a lot of surface mass...which are said to accumulate heat,..like a black top parking lot,...and that Canon says can cause the lenses to somehow affect the way the light passes through them.. I can't say for sure, but I wouldn't doubt it.. just touch the surface of a long Nikon lens vs a long Canon lens on a hot day.. Besides, Nikon has even introduced their line of white lenses as well...(but no body buys them)..

&,.....they also look more cool than do Nikon lenses..

Some L lens are black as well. All L lens have a red stripe at the front. Canon has a L series 24-70mm which is a great lens. It is a bit heavy but very sharp and fast focus.

Here is a sample image.

Sort of. There are no "white" non-L lenses, but there are more "black" L lenses than "white" ones. The white lenses are the longer telephoto, and they are white to reflect sunlight. The least expensive white lens is the 70-200 f/4L (~$600) and goes on up to the 1200mm L lens (10's of thousands I think!)

All the L primes 200mm and less (200, 180 macro, 135, etc.) and zooms (24-105, 24-70, 17-40, etc.) are BLACK. They are not white because they are shorter focal lengths and probably have less heat [affecting the image] concerns.

The two lenses I believe you are talking about -- the 24-70 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8L IS -- just happen to fall into different "paint" choices by Canon.

[NOTE: OLDER Canon L lenses were all black, so for example the 80-200 f/2.8L is the predecessor to the 70-200 f/2.8L non-IS]

I said I did not find any 20 - 70 that were L lenses. Does not mean that there are not any, just that I did not find any in my search.

I have never seen a black L lens and did not think about them when I answered initially
