I have seen many people damning the Nikon D100 in this forum and I want to say that I own one and I am extremely happy with it. The camera is not by any means perfect but as far as I am concerned it takes great images and is a very versatile camera and I will use it until it dies and at that time I will give it a hero's send off and unless Nikon by that time has produced a digital camera worth owning that doesn't require selling children into a lifetime of servitude I will buy another used D100 or I will dump my Nikon gear and go with Canon's mid-priced digital equipment aka D20.

A lot of people get really excited about the Nikon D70 and D70S but I simply can't get excited about a plastic toy that doesn't hold up. The recent Nikon Service Advisory on the D70/D70S doesn't help either and the thing that really toasts my cookies is the decision by Nikon to refuse to offer a vertical grip/battery pack for the D70/D70S. To me, this is a fatal error on the part of Nikon since Canon offers a grip for every camera they make and I for one am getting very sick and tired of Nikon's constant screwups and missteps. Nikon has been known for not listening to their consumers and I don't see that changing in the slightest in years to come.

Hoodman USA is to be highly commended for stepping up and offering a grip for the D70/D70S but it is at best a compromise, not being fully integrated with the body and changing from vertical to horizontal shooting is a nightmare and can't be done quickly.

If Nikon continues on the path they have chosen I will very likely switch over to Canon before my D100 goes to that great camera body in the sky because the best way to get any manufacturer to notice is to vote with dollars.

Nikon says they will fix it for free *if* your camera is defective. Other than that, the vertical grip isn't a show stopper for me at all. I like the D70 and am sure I will appreciate the vertical grip on higher-end Nikons when I buy one - I just don't think I'll look back and say "yea, that old d70 sucks, it didn't even have a vertical grip!".

I've been happy with my D70 thus far. I use the F100 (a kickass camera) for print work but to be quite honest, I do not remember the last time I used it, digital is just way too convenient, gotta love that instant feedback.

My biggest issue with the D70 is that it does not have a built in pc socket, which forces me to use that god-forsaken adapter from Nikon... of course.

As for that 'toy like' feeling, just about all SLR digi's I've handled feel that way compared to my F100.

Regards,
-Rick

I'm trying to remember where it was, and I can't remember where, or what I bookmarked it in,...but I saw a manufacturer who made a vertical grip for the Nikon D70,...that had a vertical shutter button on it,...and I believe other dials as well, that connected to the body by the cord that is used by the shutter release cable outlet on it... They also offered vertical grip models for cameras that had their own brand named accessory grip for their cameras,...such as the 10D,...and others...for less money...however, I think the VG for the D70 was something that you might be interested in... it came with a warranty too...so... Yep!

Hope you can find it!

"Many" might be a bit much, but everyone gripes about things that didn't live up to their expectations.

I've mainly been shooting S2's for the last couple of years, and I though I love the S2, there are issues with Fuji that cause me to never buy an S3 or other major item from Fuji.

I've shot a buddy of mine's D100 in a couple of different environments, and I liked it a lot...If I hadn't found a D2H for the right price recently, I'd have a D100 at the moment.

Both of these were shot very happily with the same D100 (my buddy Shadow's, he's here)

I really don't understand the big hype about a vertical grip. Sure, my D70 dosn't have one. But neither does my F2, FM2, Nikonos III, or Nikkormat FTN.

The one big asset I would like to see is a removable prism and an action finder like my F2. Even the professional cameras have dropped this.
