After going all digital about 7 years ago, I find that I really miss the old 2 1/4 B&W negs. Something about the clarity, the tonalities. Just haven't gotten that from digital cameras. I use the Epson 3200 Photo (which allows for transparency scans) at work, and for S&Gs I scanned in some old negs made with a Mamiya TLR about 20 years ago. Tweaked the levels a bit in PS, and printed them at 5x7 on RA4 process photo paper. Almost brought a tear to my eye. Looked as good or better than if I'd been inhaling stop bath fumes for an hour.
Which brings me to my point. Looking at the new Epson 4990, I wonder... The wife wants to restore and reconstruct some old family photos (she's gotten hundreds of pics from relatives), so she's been bugging me for a better scanner for months, preferably one with Digital ICE. Any of you guys have this scanner yet, and what's your impression regarding B&W neg scanning quality? I might just start souping my own film again and scan from there.
