Or stop by the tool rental place and rent a circle cutter for a few bucks. Take it home, set it's radius to 1.75 inches. Drill a pilot hole in the bowl and have at it with the circle cutter.

You might even find a place with a Greenlee punch tool that will make a 3.5 inch hole. Electricians use tools like that for large diameter conduit holes in panels, etc. But a circle cutter is probably easier to find...

Nice photo, but you got bit by the GG resize problem for images stored in your portfolio. You need to resize it to no more than 600 pixels on either side "before" you upload it to your portfolio. That's what's causing all the artifacts especially around the eyes. Here's a side by side sample:

Cheers,
rfs

this seems like a great idea.. MY only concern would be the depth of the bowl. most other beauty dishes seem to be more shallow, almost parabolic while this is a very deep bowl. anyone else see the potential difference there? not sure if it would make much difference... someone go buy a beauty dish and compare! ha

Call me blind, but I assume I should see the pie plate in the top image, but I don't. Could you provide an illustration....I'm intriqued.

Thank you.

beauty dishes come in several different depths. This one is a bit deeper then some but not by alot. Most of the beauty dishes I have seen have been larger though. Although I have been very happy with the light out of this one. Even more happy when it only cost about $10 as opposed to the average $100+ for most others.

Interesting point, but I suspect the relative surface curvature compared to the wavelength of the reflected light makes it a moot point. After the first bounce off the pie tin, light is going in all directions anyway and hitting the bowl surface at every conceiveable angle.

About the only effect I would anticipate is a slightly compressed "beam" out of the bowl reflector compared to the larger commercial units. But even that's not necessarily bad.

In non-scientific terms... for ten bucks, I can live with it.

Yes, I am aware of the problem. I have seen your previous posts regarding the resizing issue.

One of these days, I am going to put some new images into my GG portfolio and will follow your advice.

But for the moment, I ain't shooting and posting new stuff so you'll continue to see my crappy old images for a while ...
