As long as you have a way to attach it to the light it should work. I am not familliar with AB's. On the novatrons we just drilled 2 holes in the head and attached it with screws.

I just pulled my Bee 800 out and the silver reflector that was included with it measures 3.5 inches, so you are quite right on that. Time to put McGiver into action on this.

McGiver says to forget about the paper clip on this one. Instead we need to make a 3.5 diameter template and then trace that with a sharpie marker onto the pan. Follow that by first drilling a hole within that circle and then get out the trusty jig saw or saber saw with a metal cutting blade and carefully cut that circle out. Clean up rough edges with a file or sand paper. We can do that.

Regarding the Bees, just set your reflector or AB speedring on the bowl and pie plate and trace it wth a sharpie, no need to cut a paper template.

How big is the gap between the bowl and the pie pan it's hard to tell, it looks great though.

A couple of thoughts...

If you can live with no or at most a low level modeling light, the bowl can be plastic. Lots easier to work with...

One possible source of large diameter "bowls" is the tops they use on party trays around the holidays. Or if you can tolerate a less finished (i.e., kludgey) look, those thin aluminum pans available around Thanksgiving for roasting turkeys.

I've been working on making a couple of small (roughly 20 inch square) softboxes out of a couple of discarded computer tower cases. Cut a hole in one side for the strobe, cut most of the other side out and stretch ripstop nylon or even a white sheet across the opening and you are about done.

I keep an eye out for old movie projector screens in the thrift stores and yard sales. If you take the screen off, the stands are easily adapted to hold the lights. Cost? About $2-$5 usually. If the screen is clean, white, and not torn up, it makes a nice reflector or even a high key backdrop.
