Hey,

Not sure if anyone can help me. But i've been looking for the black scarf that Rolando's been talking about with no luck. Can anyone tell me where i can get it? Can't seem to find it on Walmart's website, or anywhere on the net.

thanks.

When I got mine...

It was only at Wal-Mart... GOD I HATE THAT PLACE...

As of late... many members have not been able to find it anywhere...

Other GGers have come up with other material to use... all of which escape me at the moment...

If you end up in a bad spot with no black scarf... let me know what size lens and I will send you a piece of mine...

Chris...

Image is of Playboys Laura Foley, with the scarf... I think it might be hard to see the affect on the web...

Not to be Captain Obvious, but Rolando's infamous black scarf trick can be accomplished with other material.

It's not just that particular piece of fabric.

Any black net (or white for that matter) can act as a diffuser with varying degrees of effect.

I have a number of Cokin filters that have black net on them, and I have some of the white ones as well.

Black nylons, or any black sheer material will work.

The effect is compounded/lessened with the aperature you shoot at as well.

While I can appreciate that you are trying to get the "exact" same one that he uses/recomends, be a sport and try some other material.

Frankly, the two cokin filters I have produce a very similiar result even though the mesh pattern on each is significantly different.

If you can't find "the" same scarf, see if you can find something similiar and give it a try.

Try browsing through a fabric store. You could pick up several pieces of different fabrics to shoot through. Experiment a little, see what you like and what doesn't work. I bet you could get out for under 5 bucks with a half dozen or more pieces of sheer fabrics.

If you cannot find it at WalMart let me know I may be able to dig through some stuff and find one for you. I don't use them but did buy some once when I saw them.

Thanks again.

Black nylon pantyhose works as good as a black scarf. I amuse many models when I pull out my black panty hose and tell them they're for me. I used to attach it to my lens with a rubberband, but you can also us a filter ring (like what's left over when you drop a filter and the glass shatters).

I tried the scarf trick on a shoot... once. Never again.

Yes, it "softens" the image and helps with skin smoothing, but unless you can test in advance under the lighting you will be using, you may be disappointed.

Since you can do much of the same type thing with an image editor, why bother. Shoot it sharp and add the effect later if needed.

Just my opinion...

I think the image below was done with the scarf in place.

The problem with the black scarf is that there is no way to undo it. So its better to just use PS to almost the same effect as you suggest.

Cheers,

ima go with what RFS just said. i had a sharp shot (b&w film) and softened it a bit in the darkroom with a ring with pantyhose stretched across it. left most of it sharp but a few seconds of the softening provided a similar effect.
