Most Beauty Dish reflectors are 22" from what I've seen,...and owning the White Lightning / Alien Bee systems for the most part,....I was wondering if there are 22" reflector grids that can be used with the 22" Beauty Dish reflectors that aren't available with their system for some odd reason... The WL/AB's reflector has the flat edge around the ring which appears to be able to accomidate 22" off brand grids, and so I was wondering if anyone of you has a WL/AB Beauty Dish w/ grid, and what brand(s) fits them..?

Thanks..

all beauty dishes aren't 22"

my mola is 33.5" and they make one that's even bigger (i think 45" or something like that.)

but i think the use of a grid would kind of defeat the way it modifies the light.... at least with the mola because of its unique shape and design.

Except different. I know Balcar makes grids for their Opalites/Diamondbox (beauty dishes). They claim it to give you soft directional light. Fom http://www.balcar.com/produit.asp?ilst=GSDia&l=3&cat=1

The size of the light source is not modified by adding a grid, so contrast and harshness of shadows is in theory not affected. In practice, a more concentrated light beam will generate fewer uncontrolable reflections in the studio which contribute to the general light level on the subject, therefore reducing contrast.

My question (to you and those you shoot with a beauty dish)is how does the dish modify the light? How does it differ from using a large softbox?

I've got the 22 inch Photogenic.

It's quasi soft, but has a lot more punch than a softbox.

Lately, I've been shooting it with some of the Rosco diffusion material over it as it provide the perfect balance between punch and soft.

I bought my Hensel Beauty Dish before I had any Hensel Lights and used it on my Alien Bee lights just fine.

It actually fit better on the four-smaller spring-fingers of the Alien Bee better (much better) than on the three-thicker White Ligtning cast-iron fingers.

The Hensel Kit comes with a (7") Grid that can replace the Center Cap, they do not have the Sock-type cover that Alien Bee uses...

Well,...I spoke to the people at WL/AB, and the sales person on the phone said that she wasn't sure why they didn't offer a grid such as that as an option, but mentioned that the ones made by Speedotron & Norman will fit their Beautydish as well.. Those are 35º grids.. not bad,...actually just about what I was looking for..

Yes, as Mark mentioned that they are fairly soft yet have more punch than do soft boxes do.. I've seen all sorts of fashion mags where the only source of light was coming from one of those from a boom stand....creating a really "edgy" looking effect.. also, a friend of mine uses his as a hair light with the grid in it..I'd say that looks better than what I currently use as a hairlight..and thought I'd give that a shot.. Thanks all!
