NO, it's not the best Canon Zoom for Portraits, it's fine for a Tourist.

look for a used Canon 24-70L (if ya can't afford a new one), they go for under a grand over on the fred miranda site.

was that a low blow to anyone using the lens! looking at prices even getting a used one will be tough.

I BOUGHT THE 28-135 IS.

researching for long enough to realize it IS a good lens for me with what im doing right now and my budget. rather than spend $1000 on a lens im spending $450 and putting the other $500 towards my student loan!

well Tim, you asked...I answered..

Do you want to take the very best photos? ...OR

Do you want to take the best photos for the least amount of money?

I don't meant to slight anyone, but if you want a reccomendation for the BEST Lens to use, then I made it.

If you can't afford it, and you want the best photos possible, then save-up until you can. A big item like this only hurts ONCE and you will be using it for a much long time and perhaps with many different bodies. It is an awesome Lens and I know a number of Canon Shooters who swear by it.

I appolgize to any owners that are happy with their 28-135IS Lenses...

I'm sure you will be happy with it and I should go back to ignoring threads like this, nothing against you, it's just that many people are looking for lower priced alternatives and I usually reccomend going with the best.

enjoy, btw, my friend (who owns both a 1D MKII and a 20D) often puts this lens on his 20D when his wife shoots it as it is a very versatile lens.

no no i completely appreciate the opinion dont worry no hard feelings. just with my current amatuer status and my lingering student loans i had to go ahead with this lens for now. next purchase will be the 70-200L 2.8 or the 24-70L 2.8 lens because i know getting a GREAT lens is crucial.

just remember were not all in the same boat, im a starving student struggling to pay rent AND eat... so investing money is a timely process. As soon as I start making ANY money off photography is when i will be able to invest more seriously.

thanks for the feedback!
