To all

Does anyone use the white balance correction on the 20d. If so what is your setting and why. I tried a few things but I have not any good result with it.

thanks
gary

I like to go warmer, so usually I set to Cloudy or Shade. If I'm doing a night shot with light sources I am unfamiliar with I go the manual white balance routine (shoot white target under that light source and use the reading for my benchmark to work from). At any rate, I find using the Auto White Balance setting on the 20D at best on the cooler side of the scale and at worse very hit and miss.

My thoughts on it anyway.

i'm lazy. i go with the basic settings: daylight, tungsten, strobe. that's pretty much it. look at it this way, when you shot film you didn't have all this ability to change or effect the color temperature-- you either used daylight balanced film or tungsten balanced or monochrome.... okay, some people used infra-red. whatever.

Depends where you are shooting, what the lighting conditions are etc. etc. That is why those settings do not work a lot of the time. I suggest purchasing an ExpoDisc and doing a Custom White balance.

However, with that said, if I'm shooting outdoors in good light, I can leave it on automatic white balance and it does just fine. In the studio, I know the Kelvin temp of my lights, so I set it to that on the Kelvin setting on the 20D.

For indoors without a strobe, you must custom white balance. Same for outdoors in shade. Those are my experiences with the 20D

filters ... yeah. but filters weren't exact as you can be with a white balance. but then, did you really need to be THAT exact with it?

"Did you really need to be THAT exact with it?"

Absolutely ... lol

Back in the day when shooting transparencies for photojournalism assignments, the right filter (and sometimes even an additional correcting gel over the face of an old Vivitar 283) meant the difference between coming back with the shot or the ****te!

Granted, white balance and corrective filters are a bit of an apples and oranges comparison. But, at the end of the day, using either correctly makes a big difference between images that make you go "oooh" or "ewww!"
