I like the round catchlight produced by an octagonal softbox, but I only have so much money for my first softbox. I was thinking either a 48" round or 36 x 48 rectangualr. Is a rectangular box more practical? What's your favorite.

Thanks,

Gregg

My two favorites are an Octobox and a half dome, basically a rectangular soft box with half of it missing. Like this:

Thanks for the response. How big of an Octobox do you have? I was thinking either the 47" Alien Bees or the 60" Photoflex if I can afford it.

Photoflex might still have the 7 foot octodome on their site for $249. It is the original model but still what a deal.

I have the AB 47"! For the price, I really like it.

i prefer an octagon because of it's wrap-around qualities. the catchlight it producer is preferable, imo, as well. i have a photoflex 5' octo. don't use it as much since i got my mola beauty dish, but it's a neat box.

Wow, thank you all for your expert opinions, I appreciate that. I ended up finding a like new 36 x 48 photoflex Q39 on ebay for a $100 so I grabbed it. However, I am going to buy the accessory kit and I still want the Octabox. So I think I think I'll save some dough and get the 47" Alien Bees to practice with that.

Thanks Again,

Gregg
