Hey All,

In preperation for a new web site that I am developing I am ordering a alien bee package. 4 lights, one 1600, 3 800's and a whole slew of access. Halo, 30x60 sb, spot grids, beauty dish, gels etc. Now..I had settled on purchasing the canon 1d mark 11. In light of the new announcements today, now I am back to undecisive. The 5d or the 1d mark 11 N. While I shoot about 20% action/sports the 8.5 frames/sec would be nice but, the 12 mp is impressive. What are your thoughts? I would appreciate ALL canon shooters opinion. I realize this is will be speculation since neither of them are quite on the market and testing has been limited. I have realized that canon just has the market...thats the way it is IMHO. Your thoughts?

ps...Chris Samples..if you read this...pm me....I need to talk to ya.

The 5d looks like a nice unit. Make your choice, it's all about money and how you shoot. I've owned the 1D and I own the Mark II and a 1Ds. for a while I thought I amde a mistake for selling the 1D. Yes, the pix were higher in the MII but they had differnet sensors. The 1D was very high quality. The one thing I really like about the MII over the 1D is I can zoom the image on the camera. other than that i've blown up images off all three cameras to a height of 48". Done right, the results are good, granted easier with the higher 12mg file. IMHO, just pick the one you can afford without any finacial burden and you will be happy.

Don't really know what to say, I've only been shooting with canon for about a year 1D2 1Ds2 before that all my shooting was on nikon and hasselblad.
Both cameras perform well but I'm not a volume shooter with only around 40K images per year, can't comment on reliabilty. Would suggest that you will need to be care what glass you clip on the front of either camera because they do make poor lenes look really bad. But that would also apply to higher res sensors from any manufacturer.
AF and exposure systems work well on both as you would expect, the newly enlarge rear lcd panel has to be a bonus if your into chimping which I'm not

I believe this topic will get booted to the "Tech Talk" forum..

Anyway,.... what Canon glass are you thinking of getting since it appears you shoot with Nikon glas for your Fuji camera..

Do you really need 8.5 fps to shoot glamour?

Have you looked into the 20D? I shoot with two of them, and they have helped me put food on the table..(such as the pizza in front of me right now)..for less money than much more expensive cameras like the ones you mentioned..

I am interested in the 5D,...but that's because I plan on making a living with that tool,...along with the many other tools I have as well..

Do you think you will learn how to efficiantly use all those new lights & accessories right away and a new camera too..?

I have 10 lights at my disposal..but some times, I work with just one.....and some times, I work with none.. It's great that you want to jump right in to this, but don't over gear yourself so quickly..

JP

Hey JP,

I always value your opinion as candid as it may be which i also appreciate. I understand what you are saying but...while im not lighting expert im not a novice either. I AM currently putting food on the table through photography which is allowing me to buy my new toys. While the 20 d is an outstanding camera and you have incredible work with it...my problem with your statement is that they are going to discontinue the 20 d and I cant justify buying "new" old technology. Having said that. I guess going back to my original question, since I have the money to make the choice, which of the two would you choose...IYHO. I am leaning towards the 1d mark 11 n becuase i like the construction, however, I wouldnt mind having a 12 mp camera.

I'd spend the bulk of money on lights. You'll see more of a difference in light quality, recycle times, consistent color and so on between the AB's and say a broncolor or hensel than between an assortment of bodies. Although the higher priced cameras have better, larger sensors, how good do they have to be to get published? I have no problems getting published with my 10D at 6 mp. The glass is where it's at.

Also think about the use of the camera. For example, I thought about replacing my 10D with the D20 and I'm glad I didn't. I have a friend who shoots for ESPN and says that the 20D's short out in light rain while the 10D's keep on going. I've shot mine in light rain with no problems and since I do a lot of location shooting, that's nice to know.

Marc,

Thanks for the input. I would agree with you on that. While I may not have the experience with strobes that most people do, I have seen a variety of what strobes everyone uses...and ur right...its all about the light. I guess that is one of my main questions, do I NEED 12 MP. As I said, I am leaning towards the 1d mark 11 n. What strobes would you recommend the highest and second higest?

one more thing....the bees can be rated at 5600 K or 5200 K uv..which do you think would be a better choice....at least for the main light?

Do you need 12 mp? That's something that you need to decide. I've had images that weren't even RAW images but were shot as superfine JPEG's that have been purchased by a very well known men's magazine and are slated for the flagship magazine. I suppose if you have the extra cash lying around, the 1Ds MarkII would be nice to have while I'm sure the 5D is just as nice but not quite as fast or well built as the Mark II. ON the other hand, the 10 and 20D's are also fine cameras for far less money.

As for how much light you'll need, that depends on what and where you're shooting. I think I could live without my 400's and prefer 800's. My main is 1600. Depending on the set up, I've had some probelems completely blowing out a seamless background with just two 400's.
