If you are really consideting the 5D I would wait a little until the production models come out so that you can get proper evaluations of the units and not just what Canon says about the performance, etc.

I have the 1Ds and the 20D.. while I love the 1Ds and use it for 80% of all I shoot I wish it had the ease of use and low noise of the 20D. ..Ummm... that sounds like a 5D.. Maybe.. I am waiting to see.

I also have a 10D that I don't use anymore ... but it served me quite well while it was in active service. Nice color rendition and always reliable.

I'm shooting with a 10D right now. I am so disappointed that the 5D is at the $3,200 price point

Hey Mark,

Yea....thinking at this point i dont need 12mp...not planning on blowing up an image the size of Manhattan. The point you made about the consturction is why I am leaning towards the Mark 11 and the speed. While I dont do much sports photog, I am planning on starting to shoot alot more..specifically surfing and power boat races. The speed would be nice. Glad to see im on the right track with my power choices in lights...my main is going to be a 1600 as well. Blowing out the back on seamless...isnt that what your supposed to do??...lol. J/K. Thanks for all of your input! I will prolly buy a 20d as a back up eventually. Right now as you know I shoot with an s3 pro which is of course you know only 6mp.

Dude,.... a point has been made a few times but you haven't replied to that..

What lenses are you planning on putting on your fancy new 1Dmk2N?

Believe it or not,...about 9 months ago...the regional Canon rep came out here and displayed all the new toys.. and here was some guy who had just bought a 1DMk2 body, but he had some piece of [censored] [censored] Sigma short focal length slow f-stop zoom lens that he probably only paid some 150 bucks for..and bragging about how "professional" his new camera was.. LOL.. he gained the respect of other ignorant novices who looked as though they were about to have an orgasim in their pants at the site of a 1Dmk2 around some dude's neck..and then,...there were people like me...and a few others who turned to look and ...and looked back with that "rolling eyes look"....nobody had to say a word.. Priceless!

The camera doesn't make you great man.. Lighting is the key to photography... second is the lens.. third is the camera.

BTW, yes I agree with Marc about the lighting issues... and just because AB offers the "coloured corrected" tubes, doesn't mean they are consistant throughout it's power range....however,..if you plan on shooting RAW like me,...then that isn't that much of an issue....(I own WL / AB lights too)..(as well as Norman)..

Do you have any reflectors, scrims, boom stands, counterweights, heavy duty stands for location use,..or planning on getting any DC powered lighting units?

As Marc mentioned,..you can get bye with a lot less camera, while taking that extra "fat" that is overkill for what you are doing, and invest it into lighting and glass..

JP

JP..

My bad man...I was planning on buying the IS series lenses. 70-200 2.8 for sure and a studio lens in the 28-100 something range...Doing a little more research. I will prolly shoot only raw...but..I may shoot jpeg as well. What lights would you recommend? The package I am buying comes with all the stands and such but I am upgrading all to the heavy duty air cushioned stands. I am purchasing some gear from CA sunbounce as well. Some of the shooting I will be doing involves outside sets so I will be using the strobes for that purpose as well. Sorry I missed a point...alot to cover....lol

Good good good.... the 70-200 IS or not, is a very good lens..

For stands,... the ones that are included in the light kit are about as cheap as you can get.. flimsy hardware,...they aren't made to hold a lot of weight.. not bad if used just in the studio.. What I did,...and I am still glad I did 13 years later, is find an "Avenger" light stand catalogue,..and thumb through that!

I use mostly Avenger stands and accessories..(black) What are very nice (but heavier than hell)..are the "Lazy Leg" stands.. one leg can extend and can be locked down while extended so you can set up on the stairs, or on a hill, safely without having to worry about your equipment toppling over.. What's also nice about them is that they can hold a lot of weight.. I've had 30 lbs in counterweights, along with a monolight, extended over twelve high in moderate wind without having the thing break, or fall over.. The hardware on them..like the knobs are all oversized & metal... not those dinky breakable nylon ones..and I believe they still cost under 200 dollars each..They are very worth the investment..(that you can write off)..and there is nothing that sucks more than having your light weight duty gear break down on you on location in front of the people who hired,...or thought they hired a professional photographer.... That I learned once.....just once! and that was a long time ago..

There are other brands of light stands,....some ore ver popular like the "C-Stands"..but I don't care for them all that much.. I'd much rather have the above mentioned stand..

I could go over my Avender stand model numbers a little later and PM you with that if you'd like..

while the Alien bee lights are fine, (I prevoiusly owned 5) their soft boxes and stands are well...let's say CHEAP!

If you want goos inexpensive stands check out Calument (their home brand) if you want great stands that will serve you long time, check out B&H and get Manfrotos.

I have a 1D Mk II and when you shoot RAW, you generate a file that is in the 8-10meg range, when you convert it to a TIF, it grows to 45meg. I can see no need for an extra 4meg unless you are doing Bill-Board work.

The full range sensor interests me some, it means I can use my 14mm to capture even more, but it also means my 300L 2.8L loses some distance when I am shooting Surfers. When shooting Models you would need to stand a step or two closer with your 24-70 or 85mm lenses, no biggie.

Which the 3fps might sound fast to some 8.5fps is world class and I love it.

I saw a used 1D MKII (with low actuations) just sell for sub 3k.

Not sure is the 5D has a sealed body, but if it doesn't, that's another mark against it.

anyway...good luck

JP,

Thanks for the input again. I would be greatfull if you would pm me the numbers if you have access to them. I was looking at westcott for SB and a halo originally but the catalog I picked up doesnt seem to make a speed ring adapter for the bees. Am I mistaken? I will be looking forward to that pm when you have a spare moment.

Thanks again,
M
