I don't think it is subjective. PC's have a harder time with postscript processing, they are slower when it comes to graphics (except for some 3D) and color management is way better on a Mac. I'm just not willing to pay for it.

I'm saying that your statement is subjective. I find the Windows systems to be faster in every area than the MAC. But that is my subjective evaluation after running both systems.

As for the mouse, the mouse for Window's systems has two buttons and a roller on it. As a result you have a whole bunch of shortcuts that can be built into the right click action (for example, in Photoshop, when you right click you get a context sensitive menu with options available at that point). The Roller has many different functions. For example it can be used to scroll pages, text, images, etc just by rolling the roller.

Cheers,
rfs

Just today, I gave away a 1984 Lomas Data Products S-100. These were based on a design originally published in Popular Electronics in 1977, I believe. Had 256 kB (yes, kB) of RAM and a 20 MB (yes, MB) hard drive. Ran CP/M-86 and, eventually, MS-DOS 2.11. I had to write my own SCSI drivers. I gotta confess, when that system crashed, it was invariably my flawed programming - because we wrote most of the software ourselves.

That experience makes me less than sympathetic to the "Windows versus Mac" issues. Both are trying to provide highly sophisticated tools to relatively naive users, and both do a pretty amazing job at it.

But, I'm kind of curious - I've been installing Linux on our lab systems, and computers that are unusable with Windows are quite responsive with Linux. They've also been quite robust compared to my experiences with XP and data acquisition. Is anyone using Linux for photoprocessing?

Well the TRS80 Model 1 that I still have was purchased in 1977 so its sort of old. Do you remember the Altair and the Sols (that you had to build your self). The first one you had to use toggles to bootstrap enought of the operating system to get a tape reader to bring in the rest. There were no floppy drives or hard drives at that point. The TRS80 Model 1 came with a cassette recorder and that was quite a step up from the paper tapes. Those were the good old days!
Cheers,
Roger

The Altair is the Pop-E system I referred to, the grand-daddy of all S-100 systems. Yeah, I remember them. And the joy of writing your own BIOS to get the "commercial" OS running.

Guess we're both old coots, Roger. These young whippersnappers just don't appreciate how good they've got it! No dodging, burning-in, or internegative work!

Whew! I thought that this was going to be another Mac vs. Windows debate. Thank you sir for not starting that, it does get old. I use Windows XP at home and a Mac at work. I forget who posted the reply, but he/she is correct in the aspect that most of the buisness world uses Windows and any company that has something to do with images has Macs somewhere in the building doing just that. While the current machine I am using does get me by, I would so love to have a Mac. I just prefer them, but until then, I'll do what so many of us do, and get by with what I have.
