What's everyone doing for continous lighting? I'm getting ready to do some Black & White images and want to use continous lighting rather than strobes. Any suggestions on what to purchase at a reasonable price? Thanks!

Thanks! The only problem is that they don't just sell the lights.

Sure they sell them. They have some pretty decent equipment at resonable prices. I've got one of their tripods and like it alot. Here's a link to the lights.

Hmmm... must be something wrong with their site. The link takes me to their Lighting section but the only information about lights is the lighting kits which include a softbox and stand.

Smith Victor 3400k photofloods (250W or 500W) put out a relatively decent amount of light for very little cost. I use them quite a lot as a focus lamp when using strobes and ringflash, and in a pinch I've used them as a light source as well...

BTW a lot of make-up artists like to using them in the studio with the 4800k "daylight" bulbs as they have a nice bright viewing light and can judge skin tone fairly accurately to daylight.

There prices for the lights and softboxes and stands is less than you pay for a comparable light elsewhere. The light they sell reminds me of the Starlite.
Cheers,

Westcott has a new light out called the Spiderlite TD5 that can use either tungsten or fluorescent lamps. They also have one that uses only tungsten called simply Spiderlite. Those TD5s sound pretty cool... the MSRP on that is $399.90 (found it at B&H minus the bulbs for $349.90). The other one is cheaper of course, at MSRP $189.90 (found it cheaper at B&H).

One of my teacher's favorite photo floods was a Tota light by Lowel -- $127.95 at B&H (including bulb)

Someone already mentioned the Starlites by Photoflex, which are only a little more than the Totas. The Spiderlites by Westcott seem similar to those.

Of course you could get into some other fluorescent Kino Flos, Lowels, etc., but from what I've found that gets way pricey.

Anyways, hope this helps!

Sam

Thanks everyone. I'll look into all the different options you've provided. I'd like to stay within a a few hundred for a pair of them since I don't know if I'll really get into hot light photography that much. I'm thinking of them for mainly my art nudes and possibly the hollywood glamour look. I may also need a focusing one that can act as a spot. But that may have to wait.

Thanks again!
