I'm considering on purchasing a 550ex for my 10d. I've been shooting using reflectors for a few months now and would like to get my hands on using a flash. Someone online was selling it for $240, is that a good price used?

Alternatives?

Take a look at the Sunpak PZ40X. It is a Flash that has been getting very good reviews. And it is not as expensive as Canons Flash.

Buy a used 550EX... I still use both of mine..

The 420 and what ever the other one is,....suck... trust me there.. there are certain features that they lack that are much better on the 550EX flash.. in addition, the 550EX is more powerful...and the more power you have, the better off you are..

Oh,...and yes,... I for got to say that 240 bucks is a decent price for a 550EX used..

Learn how to use it in full manual output mode.. just keep your eye on the distance between you and your subjects, and for bouncing,... play around with it in the house until you "get the idea" on how to nail the exposure with bounce flash in manual mode.... I've become pretty efficiant with mine..

KEH has one in Excellent condition for $265 KEH Canon Flashes

I got mine from them, but mine was listed as Bargain, and there was nothing wrong with it that I found.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't get the 420...unless I needed a cheaper slave. The 550 (set as master) will fire the 420. The 420 can't be a master....

If you're just wanting a flash to attach to your camera, the 420 is just fine. I've used mine for several years and have shot glamour, weddings, parties, etc. and it works great. Sure it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but if you really want what the bells and whistles offer, you'd be better off buying Alien Bees. I know people who have spent several thousand on Canon 550, 580, and all the other stuff you have to have to make more than one of them work at once and for that money they could have had 3 or 4 bees and all the trimmings and lights that recycle in 1/2 second instead of 5-10 seconds, and a portable battery pack to run them all.

Cheers,
rfs
