I say go for it... I've had my G4 (500mz dual processor) for several years now with nary a problem. Heck, my old Power Mac 9600 still works great! Just be sure to get as much RAM as you can afford, and you'll be smooth sailin'.

I say go for the one with the 1Ghz processor and the super drive. The capability of burning dvd's is great, wish I had it. Anyhow, I also recommend that no matter what size the internal hd is, to get an external because we all know how fast hard drives can fill up with images. But that is not necessary right away. Don't worry, I understand about your frustrations with windows.

Welcome to the family!

We run 6 Mac servers and 4 work stations. Other than disk maintenance, blowing the dust out, and disk upgrades they have never been down. One is 7 years old running a web application that I built and never had the time to rewrite it in a language that is on our newer servers. It just keeps rockin'.

Now, the one that my sons keep downloading buggy Java games on is another story.

Just a word of warning....be careful what aftermarket RAM you buy if you're going to run 0SX on a G4...OSX handles RAM differently and some of the RAM that may have worked fine with OS9 will freak out OSX...buy RAM from a MAC certified dealer if you can

I think that if you are going to get a low-priced Mac you should just buy an eMac and sign off. A co-worker of mine bought a 1.25GHz eMac with 256MB RAM, an 80GB hard drive, and a SuperDrive at Fry's last week for $700. It's got FireWire, it's got USB 2.0, who cares if it doesn't have any expansion slots? I'd upgrade the RAM, but that'd be the only problem.

If you want an external monitor, buy a MacMini, jack up the RAM, and buy a big external drive. Done deal. Apple's Refurb Store (accessed through the "Great Deals" tag on their store website) has eMacs, flat-panel iMacs, and Mac Minis on sale right now, with full factory warranty. Check it out.

I have to agree with stmarc. Buying an upgraded older Mac is a mistake in my opinion. If you don't want to drop big coin on a new Powermac or iMac, then the eMac or even the Mini isn't a bad choice. I have a 20" iMac and an NEVER going back to Windows. I even added a 15" PowerBook and at 1.67GHz and 1.5GB of RAM it runs just as fast as my old 2.8GHz P4. I really don't have to wait unless I'm using massive filters in Photoshop.

Good choice and welcome to the light!!!

I've been thinking of switching too, but I have my eyes on the Dual G5's, but with Apple switching over to Intel chips, I think the longer you wait the better the deal on the current Models.

I do have a 12" PowerBook already, and get yourself a big fat Lacie external Hard Drive and the mac 20" monitor and you're set...

I would only buy NEW computers...
