If you haven't heard the news, Canon has made a new camera,...that wasn't officially announced,...but the specs are all available along with pictures.. Apparently, someone leaked something he should have kept quite about until August 22nd.. LOL!! .....and now,... millions of us already know.... oh, and there was also mention of a "1DMark II N" body as well...(Hmmm....I believe some one in deep poopy! )

Well,... Here are a few main features you may be interested in:

Total Pixels: 13.3 Total effective pixels = 12.8 CMOS sensor, Full Frame.
DIGIC II Processor
AF System/Points: 9-point AF (plus 6 invisible Assist AF points) (..?...hmmmmmm I can't wait to see that)
AF Range: EV -0.5 -18 (at 20°C & ISO 100)
35 zone meter, Partial 8% and spot meter of 3.5%
Metering Range: EV 1-20 (at 20°C with 50mm f1.4 lens ISO 100)
ISO speeds: 100-1600 (in 1/3-stop increments) plus 3200 & 50 BTW, I've heard from three different people that the high ISO noise is "unmatched" by any other Canon, or camera thus far!
Monitor: 2.5" TFT, approx. 230k pixel
X-sync 1/200 sec but no built in pop-up flash!
Continuous Shooting: 3 fps (My reason for keeping the 20D bodies)...(speed maintained for up to 60 images (JPEG)/17 images (RAW))2 (However, this is AT LEAST as good as the 1Ds was , plus with much better "plumbing", and a much larger buffer and a larger file with far more dynamic range and much less noise!)

Basically the 5D has the same "guts" and lay out as the 20D as far as white ballance, shooting modes, buttons, controls..etc..

The price,.... here is the funny part.. I initially hears it was going for about 3 thousand dollars, but according to a friend who I used to work with at the paper, who was one of the testers of this camera, he said that he has "ordered one" and is already on a waiting list to recieve one..( this came to me about two weeks ago).. and he claims to have "paid" $1,500.00 for this camera! If that's the case,...all I can say is Nikon, R.I.P.

I guess we'll have to wait until the 22nd for Canon to officially announce it.. LOL!!

JP

I'd rather take the 1D MKII unless if on the 5D you can lowers the size image you're shooting to 8mp then that shold make the FPS ALOT faster Since I don't shoot for any magazines and only for a hobby then I don't really need the full frame. And also the 5D says its only 3fps? The 1d MKII is 8.5fps. And 8mp from my 20D has always been plenty enough for me to print up 13x19 prints on my Epson R1800.

If you can set image size one step down to lets say 8mp on the 5D then maybe the fps will be ALOT faster? Then I'd consider that over the 1D MKII. also, they're saying the 5D will be $3,500 in the US. So the price is competing against the 1D MKII.

Oh and the 5D won't be a proffessionaly camera like the 1D MKII, its not weather sealed.

This is all very interesting, now they've got me sweating to here more specifics about it.

at 3fps it will not be good for sports, at $1500 this would be the perfect back-up camera for a 1D MKII...

LOL!! You and I both... well,...not so much this time around...

Back in 2001, I paid three thousand dollars for the D30,...a camera that I both loved and HATED!! (pulling hair out of my full head of hair just thinking about it..)....I actuall;y ended up paying nearly a thousand bucks more with the optional grip, another battery, the 160MB CF 8x Lexar and a 550EX flash... and then a two or three months later,...they discontinue the D30,...and then they drop the price of it some 500 bucks over night...and then some 3 weeks later, they announce the 6MP D60 camera that went new for 8 hundred bucks less than my nearly brand new D30! I couldn't believe it!

Well,...keep in mind that the 20D is a better performance camera as far as FPS, which I enjoy, and require for much of the work I do, so I won't be selling my 20D bodies any time soon..

You have a great camera there Jimmy.......BTW, didn't you buy my remaining D30 body some 2 years ago..? I think that was you.. I forget..

LOL.... It's a darn good camera... One thing that the 1D MkII won't have is a full frame sensor.. that means, your lenses which are designed for a 35mm film format, (24m x 36mm) are not going to provide you with the results such as closeness to the subject, or softening of backgrounds than a FF camera can.. Besides,....after shooting professional sports, I managed to shoot the Milwaukee Rampage with my 3 FPS D30 body which had a considerble shutter lag time...and I still managed to make a living with it..because it's all about timeing......Yes, the 20D is much much better than the D30...and I am very happy to have two of them now..as opposed to using two D30 bodies,....and the higher frame rate of the 1Dmk2 is even nicer,.... I at one time used the EOS 1nRS body which cranked off 10 frames per second...it was nice and fast, although it didn't really make me a better shooter.. What really helped me out in shooting sports and candids was watching and anticipating that precise moment when the action was at it's peak... and the shutter lag is almost as fast as it was on the 1N film bodies which is very very quick..heck, faster than that of the A2 bodies for sure..

The 5D won't have a faster frame rate with smaller res setting... but at least my pictures will look "whole" again.. That, is a desire I've had since I went digital 4 years ago.. Any "cropping factor" stinks!
