Last week I asked opinions on the Epson R1800 printer. But because a good 95% of what I print is B&W on matte paper, some suggested the Epson R2400 instead. I did some research and that's what I ended up getting. Out of the box, the first print was simply excellent. Since it was after dark when I installed it, I have not had a chance to view the prints in daylight, but under tungsten and floursecent light, they easiy meet my highest criteria for silver based B&W prints. In fact I compared a print from it with one I made a couple of years ago in the darkroom and damned if I don't think this one is better.

At 850 bucks, this monster was way beyond this old retired fart's budget, but my initial impression is that it looks to be well worth the price. I think Epson has done it. With this sort of quality, rag paper and archival quality inks, Epson has finally put the digital versus silver based printing to bed. And I've just begun to explore its capabilities.

I expect to change my site so that I'll no longer offer traditional prints for sale.

Gotta love those K3 inks, and with all the black and white you print, would be a shame to see it come out on the R1800. Enjoy the 2400, it is a real gem

How do we see the printed version?

Going to retire my Stylus 1280 soon after about 4 years of fine service.

I just unpacked my new R1800 I bought from my sister who purchased 2 with a killer deal. I printed a test print shot from my 10d on her printer and it was flawless. I'm already happy with it without printing the first photo out of my printer My friend owns a 2200 so I didnt hesitate to pick this one up. I'll print a B/W and let you know how it comes out.

Hey Doug. As far as printers go, can't go wrong with Epson. I have worked with thier high end commercial printers, and well, we use them for color proofs for a reason, as you have found out first hand. I am a traditional photographer, and slightly disagree with you on the archival and overall quality of these excellent printers compared to traditional, but it is very close.

Good...just paid another $50 for color and b&w ink. Nobody has mentioned the costs with the 1800 or 2400? I have spent much more for the ink than the cost of the printer.

Also, many models are now happy to get CD's and JPEG's over the internet and I find myself printing probably 90% less than in my film days.

Model Maggie from your area.
She was happy with just web images and never asked for prints.
