I'm thinking of buying a Canon 20D. Any suggestions on prime lenses? But more importantly, for anyone who's got one, is the 85mm f1.2 L worth the money? It would stretch my budget, but it looks like a nice lens.

i don't have the "L" glass in the 85mm, but i have the 85mm 1.8 and i really like it a lot as a portrait lens on both my 10D and 20D doorstops. ("Doorstops" Copyright MMV by Chung Lee, All Rights Reserved.)

I do not have the 85 L lens either. I do have the Tamron 28-75 DI lens and it has been a great lens that has worked for me in the studio and outside.

For the money, you can't argue the 85 1.8 The 1.2 is a luxury if the job merits it... along with the wallet able to support it.

Other considerations in the 1.8 1.4 1.2 realm, if focal length isn't an issue, for about $75 50mm 1.8, the 50mm 1.4 i think is $330ish.

I have the 85 F1.2. I love it, but something even more important is the fact that JimmyD can easily out shoot my abilities with the 85 F1.8. So I wouldn't get too hung up on the F1.2 L vs F1.8 non-L issue. I just had a few extra $$ in my pocket and Samys didn't have the F1.8 the day I had my last moment of lens buying weakness.

I've also got the 85mm f:1.8. It would be very difficult for me to justify the extra expense of the f1.2. The 1.8 is extremely sharp with great contrast and color, and you could buy a few of them for what the 1.2 costs. For the money, I'd be more tempted to buy the f1.8 AND the 200 f2.8L. Others would disagree heartily, I'm sure. :-)

If you can afford it, go with the 1.2........... the DOF in awesome! and the glass is so sharp..... I love mine and use it all the time at Weddings & in the Studio.... the cropping with the 20D makes it a little tough (I had a 10D) in small/close places but on the 1D & 1Ds it works well.... I would say save a little cash and get the 1.8 I have it and love it. The 50 1.4 is great as well. heck...buy them both then go have a drink and you will still be ahead of the game.

The 85mm f/1.8 is the best bang for the buck. I sold mine to put the money towards the 70-200mm L f/2.8 and i miss my 85mm, I loved that lens! Actually, i'll be buying it again. Remember, the 85mm f1.2 if very slow focusing compared the the f1.8.

I also have the 85mm f1.2, and its one awesome lens. Very sharp, and I love the razor thin DOF you can get with it. But, yea, its very expensive for a 85mm prime. The 85mm f1.8 is close, and a good lens in its own right, but once you use the 1.2 you'll feel the difference. Is it worth the extra $1,000 and more weight in your camera bag? Only you can decide that. $1K will buy you a few other nice lenses Canon has... And yes, the 1.2 is slower in focusing than the 1.8, but I rarely use AF when shooting models anyway, so its a moot point for me but might not be for you.
