Marketplace, NPR's business oriented daily news, looked at the problem amateur photographers are having getting prints made at various photoprocessors, along with some comments from the Professional Photographers of America.

I had a problem just a few weeks ago. My printer was acting strange so I ran up to the wallgreens drug store and printed 3 pictures and the guy said.." Hey you can't print those. That's a famous model" It was of CJ Gibson. I told him I took them and had to give him my biz card . I still don't think he thinks I was on the up and up.

My cliant who I shot the last clothing line with wants her to model the christmas line. And I can't contact her. She is very picky about who she wants. I don't know who will walk in to shoot if CJ does not get back with her.

First off, don't just go up to a kiosk or print terminal and start pulling up thumbnails off the card or CD. Go to the lab manager, tell them you're a photographer, hand them your card, perhaps even take in your book (if you have one). Inquire about their policy regarding pro-quality shots and printing. If the lab manager feels you are trying to be honest and not being some horndog, they'll let you know how to go about getting the prints made. But if they spew the tired old "we can't print professional photos", go elsewhere. Another lab will be better informed as to what that actually means, and when it applies (i.e. copying an existing print).

Another thing I learned was to take in the original files as reference. You know, the ones that aren't all prettied up. They'll know real quick there's no way anyone but the actual shooter would have those image files.

Makes a change from printing anything © or not and then making a few extra copies for their friends....

Sounds like I am one of the few, if not only lucky ones here. I am fortunate (and lucky) enough to have an excellent lab here in Fresno that has a large list of pro photographers that they get to know, and I havn't had any problems with any sort of printing. Of course, I've been going there for 15 years, and know the owners, which probabbly weighs heavily in my favor. But hey, getting to know the people at a good lab is a good idea no matter if you shoot film or digital.
