I'm on the verge of buying an Epson R1800 printer, probably this sometime week. I've done about as much research as I can reasonably do on it and have to say I'm impressed. I've seen several test prints and even printed a couple of my own shots. It seems to give the best glossy prints I've ever seen from a printer and outstanding matte prints, both with no easily visible metamerism. I'm also highly impressed with the archival or near archival quality of the inks. But I've obviously not been able to do any in depth testing with it.

Now my problem. It's beyond my 'retirement' budget just now, so I can't afford to make a mistake. Does anyone have an R1800 or is anyone otherwise familiar with it? Second, does anyone know anything 'unpleasant' about it? Any 'warnings' or heads up about it?

Doug

I don't have the R1800 but I have an R800 and I am very happy with it. I only print on Glossy and Premium Luster papers. I have sold many prints made with this printer. If you aren't going to be printing on Matte paper you will be very happy with this printer. No problems of any kind with hundreds of 8 X 10 and 4 X 6 prints using Epson Profiles.

I had the R1800 for a couple of months and was very happy with it. I sold it when I upgraded to R2400. I was very happy with the 1800, but got a too-good-to-pass-up deal on the 2400.

I printed a shot on the 2400 that I had previously printed on the 1800 and it was noticeably better. But that should be expected from a printer costing $300 more.

I have not doubt you will be happy with it.

I print almost exclusively on matte paper, about 95% of my stuff. Have you found any problem there?

Sorry I don't print on Mattie. It is my understanding that if you do you will be better served with the R2400. Sounds like you need to see both side by side.

Here is from the CNET review:

The Stylus Photo R1800 does a reasonably good job with black-and-white output but creates composite grays, typically resulting in a slight color cast in the print. For more neutral monochrome, you'll have to opt for the R2400. Though not quite neutral, the R1800's grays show less variability under changing light sources than do those of its competitors. It also displays a very good dynamic range and color accuracy, as well as the best flesh tones of any of the photo printers we've seen thus far. Text looks extremely sharp, though under a loupe we spotted some minor irregularities. Also, graphics had some slight printhead banding in the gradient fills, as well as some slight jaggies in the curves.

This may have caused me to not make a mistake. I was unaware of the Epson R2400 before this, but after some research I think that's the drection I'll go. It's way beyond this old retired fart's budget, but simce at least 90% of my prints are matte B&W, that looks like the best bet for me. Now I've just got to dig up some private commissions before the end of the month to help pay for it.

My stuff
