I am looking for a calibration device for my monitor.
You know these futuristic looking triangular thing you position on your screen to analyse the colors.
I saw a few around $200.
The claim is that these devices can save time and money; allowing repeatability and screen proofing to save paper, ink and time.
Is-there any photographer on this forum who has experienced first hand these new tools.
If so any recommendation?

Thanks

I have the Pantone ColorVision Spyder and I have mixed feelings about the unit and software. I absolutely LOVE the monitor that it CAN calibrate.

The whole story:

I am running a dual monitor system on Windows XP. For whatever reason the software will only calibrate the primary monitor. It is EXTREAMLY noticeable that one monitor is properly calibrated and the other isnít.

In addition the software is very lacking in easy of use and understandability. Not to mention that it pops up really weird dialog boxes that confuse the crap out of people that donít have a software background.

That being said I do like having my monitor properly calibrated. I gives me very good confidence that my images will look superb in print and on others monitors. To see that effect I simply have to drag the image to the non-calibrated monitor. Prints come out looking very much like what you see on screen and I have never been disappointed by images that I have ordered from Ofoto.

I use the Pantone Spyder Optical. Unlike the other post, I find the software easy to use. Having a properly calibrated monitor is an absolute requirement if you are going to print. Then at that point you must also make sure you have profiles for your printer, paper and ink combo. First you MUST have a calibrated monitor though. You can find the product here

Your issue with trying to calibrate dual monitors in XP is a problem in XP not the Spyder software. There is a little information on the ColorVision website here. What I did was profile the 2nd monitor since that will help a little, however, you won't be able to calibrate it.

I thought you were selling the Spyder Photocal not the Optical. The Optical is the one with the more advanced software (the one worth getting).
