I need to know is there a way that I can reset the admin password without the disks. I got this from the school that I work for because they were no longer going to be using them and they were going to auction. However all the software is locked and I want to be able to use it. If I have to purchase the OS system I will but want to make sure that is the only way I can get around the password.

Thanks so much

DeAnn

Do you know what their password is? If so, its easy to change. Just go to the Apple Menu --> System Preferences --> Accounts, click on the account you want to change at the left, then type in the new password in Password and Verify.

If you DON'T know the original password, well, I dunno. I'd ask the person who gave it to you.

Hope this help DeAnn.

Sam

EDIT: Actually, I'm not sure if you need their password or not... but I know that's were you set the password.

EDIT 2: Okay, yes, you do need the original password.

It can be done, but it's an incredible pain in the arse, and involves diving headfirst into Unix (at least when I had to do it).

Save yourself an incredible amount of misery and hiccups and get the cd's.

It's kinda that way on purpose...

You may not like playing with unix. It can be disasterous. I deal with it all the time on my servers but not workstations.

Try this link:

I would highly suggest calling a Mac consultant or calling a local Apple Store.

Good Luck!!

As stated before if you can get the password.

But I assume you thought of that.

Is this running OS X?

When you start up I assume you only come to a log in window and no farther, is that right? If so see if the school has the system disc, and boot from disc 1 and choose Installer>reset password. If you can't get the disc, find what version OS is on it and you can try buying that version from OWC OS X page I'm not sure if your buy tiger if it let you change a previous versions password, or if this will even work. But it would be worth a try.

You could also go to the Apple discussion boards at Apple or Macfixit .com.

Is the machine older than a late model G3? If so you probably can't use the newer OS's so you will have to get something from work. or e-mail me (cclesue@comcast.net). If it is a G4 you really should spring for the newest version of OS 10 (.4).
