For those of you using XP with SP2 someone has written a "Power Toy" that will let you view RAW files in the thumbnail mode when exploring directories.

I know some use catalog programs and so on but this critter is really handy and so far I've had no problems with it. You can't beat the price.... it's free!

Of course with the new PS CS2, you can just open the Bridge and it gives you a wonderful set of tools to work with, without ever having to open Photoshop.

Cheers,
rfs

Just an FYI, don't install the RAW Viewer and thumbnailer just yet. It's got some bugs (to say the least).

My favorite of these bugs is that after you install the software, you will no longer be able to delete any image files off of your hard drive. For some reason or another, the power toy keeps the image locked, and if you try to delete an image type of file, the OS tells you that the file is in use.

I just tested the delete problem that you mention and had no problem deleting files from Explore in either thumbnail or or details view. Delete also worked using the delete button when in full view mode.

Are you sure you didn't have the image open in something else too?

What other bugs have you found in it?

When did you download and install the powertoy? From what I gathered on MS's forums' there's at least two different builds (possibly three) of the powertoy.

The delete bug was in the first two. I confirmed this on two of my PC's.

Go here to see a list of bugs:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...xp=&sloc=en-us

Here's part of the list:

By: Miika Asunta In: microsoft.public.windowsxp.photos

Six issues with the XP RAW Viewer:

1 It doesn't remember window state: It never opens maximized.

2 Deleting files: corresponding THM-files are not deleted (it is obvious
that they are left there if RAW viewer doesn't know about them). THM files
are created by Canon cameras and they contain full EXIF information.

3 only part of the EXIF data is displayed, it seems that the THM-files are
totally ignored.

4 Sometimes files are not closed when the RAW Viewer quits, preventing
deletion or moving of a file ("file in use by another application"). Maybe a
bug with file caching?

5 "Are you sure you want to delete?" defaults to "no" causing one extra
keystroke. Suggestion: the last used answer should be default.

6 It only shows unedited RAW-data.

Now.. *SUPPOSEDLY* #4 was fixed about a day after the powertoy was released. The problem is that Microsoft didn't change the version number, so the old version and the fixed version are both 1.0. I downloaded the supposed fixed version, but the problem still persists.

Here's why it still perists though:

Hi Miika,

I am the program manager for the Pro Imaging Powertoys at Microsoft and
wanted to thank you for your comments.

I can add some additional detail to Tim Grey's response regarding the file
locking issue.

We posted a refresh build of the Powertoy on Microsoft.com yesterday in part
to address this; however, the only change we made was to disable TIFF
thumbnailing by default. You can do the same thing on your version by
clicking on the Options button in the Viewer and clearing the TIFF
thumbnailing checkbox--you do not need to reinstall the software.

If you did reinstall the software per Tim's suggestion, please check this
setting to verify that it is turned off.

Since Windows already provides default thumbnailing for TIFF files
(including Canon RAW images) this doesn't substantially reduce functionality
of the software. We will have a more comprehensive fix in a future update.

Best,

Gary Voth, Rich Media Group
Microsoft Corp.

So... whenever MS gets around to releasing version 1.1, I'll re-install it. BTW, no I didn't have my images open in another program. I thought of that too. I shut down all applications, and I still couldn't delete files. Even more strangely, say I was working on a file and I saved the file. If I made a subsequent change I had to save the file as a different file name. Any and all attempts to save the file with the same file name (from the same program AND the same editing session) would give me an error message that the file was in use and couldn't be overwritten.

Ah! They may have gotten around to fixing it then. I downloaded it the day it came out (and being an IT guy myself, I should have known better). Going to have to re-try it again. -keeps fingers crossed-

Now if MS would ever get around to fixing their SMB bug where you get data corruption/timeout errors using an XP client to connect to a fileshare on a Win2k3 Advanced Server file cluster, life would be grand.
