More out of necessity and "newbie-ness" than artistic motivation, I am limited to available light shooting at this time. Obviously, there are severe limitations to this method, but it is also a very simple and liberating way to shoot. A huge advantage is not having a need for assistants!

I compare it to being a guitarist and limiting one's self to acoustic performances, i.e., photography unplugged.

Any others out there who are limited to or prefer available light? Let's see some examples.

One of my favorites from the recent Sexy Di at the airport shoot:

(Looks like she's unplugged too!)

A favorite indoor (hand-held, 50mm lens with film):

I'm a big fan of outdoor shooting. I can occassionally get a light kit and do some indoors but natural light just gives such a non-sterile feel. Indoor lighting can feel fake at times unlees you really know what you are doing.

You need some light modifiers and also hints on how to turn open air locations
into giant soft boxes....
since you like to shoot at george bush park, - if you are ever at the
Bark Park (Millie Bush Park) in the mornings, stop by and chat, I'm there
with Biko...(my poodle). tomorrow from 0800-10:00 am, maybe till 10:30.
I'm in the small dog park area.

I usually have a black 101st airborn hat on and dark sunglasses.
It's approx 1.5 miles past the armory off of westheimer and hwy 6.

have a good one.

Some of the shortcomings of available light such as facial shadows can be partially compensated with Photoshop shadow/highlight and dodge tool.

Since I am also a film shooter, I have learned that over-exposing negative film 1/2 stop gives greater shadow detail. In the event that shadow areas still "grain out", I use blur tool and sponge tool - desaturate to clean up those areas.

Great shot Allen...AS ALWAYS ...

Read a bit of Florida Trivia today...seemed strange, but you tell me...

"No matter WHERE you are in Florida you are NEVER more than 60 miles from a beach"

...if that is correct, that is just WRONG...

That's sounds right, however, I think you could exchange the word "beach" for "hurricane"...LOL...

Often you need more assitants for natural light shooting than for studio work. You often have to have reflectors and flags of some sort to get a photo that is more than just a snapshot. That will often require one or more people to hold the various light modifiers. Of course, you might argue, that then it is no longer natural light, because its being modified, but all "natural" light is modified everytime you shoot. Clouds, walls, trees, lens choices, filter choices, ISO setting, exposure, etc. all modify the light.

But yes, shoot in natural light is nice and is a challenge sometimes to creatively use what you can find to modify the light to get just the right shot. Sometimes that means waiting for hours, however.

Cheers,
rfs
