....Does one charge for photography? My constant delema has been what to charge a client. I started doing portraits(indoor and out), and some small weddings. Should I charge a per roll fee? Do I include enlargements in that fee? Do I charge extra for enlargements? How many different clothing and backround changes should I allow for the fee I charge?

There seems to be so many variables it is driving me nuts. I would like to have one... maby two simple prices if thats possible. Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

The digital arena is causing many photogs to revamp their entire method of pricing, not only in consumer (portrait work), but also in the commercial arena.

You might want to visit the web pages of a number of portait photographers, and see how many different ways are being utilized at this time. (Those can be found by doing a Google search for Professional Photography Organizations).

Then look at what will make sense for you, in how you are doing things. There is no one way to price your services, and no one can do it for you......all we can do is tell you how to go about the process.

To price properly, you must go through an accounting procedure, which, while it might be simple in your situation, can be complex in other situations. In either case, all of the inputs will vary from one business to another. Only the process is constant.

Get yourself a copy of the ASMP book Professional Business Practices in Photography. There is an entire chapter dedicated to pricing and estimating and it's quite eye-opening. I personally think this book should be in any photographer's book collection who is serious about photography. The entire book is an excellent tool to help guide photographers in various aspects of the business!

Good day!

Mike

Thanks for your input. I see you live in NPR. I am in PR in Jasmine Lakes. Maybe we can get together and meet sometime and toss around some ideas.

The way that I came up with my prices is that I shot several different types of film and had prints made from each. Then decided what I figured (guessed) how much my time was worth to me. very important

Then I took my hourly rate. and called that my sitting fee. And I charge that by the roll. It usually takes me about an hour to shoot 36 exposures of Portra or NPS

Then "marked up" my cost of prints and other product by 300%. I know that sounds like bunch, but most of the shooters in my area are higher than that.

Most of my clients say that my prices are very reasonable
