I have a Dell Laptop running Windows XP.
It has a Pentium 4 3ghz processor
1G RAM
64MB Nvidea Graphics Card.
30mb harddrive with only the bare necessities stored on it-only 10mb used
I use a MAXTOR 300gb Xternal for storage.

The computer is horrible. It is only 1 year old and I bought it cause my old one couldnt process the image files. This one aint much better. It is slow as sh*t when running certain PS functions. Last week it crashed while I was workin on sombodys pix and I had to reinstall windows and all the drivers and programs etc.
I am really over it and want to know ...is this computer Whack? Does it need more of something that I might be able to get as an upgrade? Is Mac a better system for this type of stuff? What are yall using, and have found works for you?

I have a Macintosh with a 1.25GHZ G4 Processor, 1 gig of memory and many gigs of hard drive space on multiple hard drives. I have not had any problems with my system and have not had to reload my operating system. Some photos may take a little longer but I have never had my system crash because of it. I am sure there are PC users who have not had any problems either.

is this computer Whack?

If its a PC that's kinda like asking is water wet.
I'll take a Mac anyday. they're harder to crash, faster and virtualy imune to viruses.
And they are very user forgiving....I've only managed to kill one out of seven and had to really try to finally axe that one.
Of course changing platforms may be cost prohibitive.

I have a Mac Mini 1.42Ghz, 80GB HD with 1GB of RAM running El Tigre. I had a 200GB exteral drive for backup that just bit it. I plan on setting up a storage server using NASLite+, a spare PC, and a couple of big drives. Right now I have to be happy with just my 80GB external drive and knowing that everything on the 200 was copied off my old PC that's in a closet (so it still exists). So far I love having switched to a Mac.

Desktop is a 1.8GHz G5 20" iMac. 1GB Ram 250GB HDD inside and 500GB outside via Firewire.

Notebook is a 1.67GHz G4 15" powerbook. 1.5GB RAM 80GB HDD.

I went Mac in Feb. after nearly 20 years of PC use. My first desktop was a 10MHz 80286 AST with 2MB RAM and a whopping 20MB HDD. My Nikon D70 has more processing horsepower now I'd love to use linux, but the photo tools just aren't there yet. GIMP is nice, but it ain't no Photoshop CS2. I got so tired of the constant updates etc. that I couldn't do it any more. Windows is out, Tiger is in!

I feel like a crack dealer now... Try it, you'll like it... Too bad the first one ISN'T free

with my friend in his studio as a PS person I took my Mac with me. (one of them) I did this because I've never had a PC and didn't like the idea of having to learn it. Since then I've upgraded to a dual G5 and love it. No computer is perfect but for the last three years I've seen his PC's give him nothing but headaches while mine just keeps purring along. since upgrading to OS 10 I've had hardly any trouble with programs stalling or locked up systems. After three years and 5 PC's he's finally throwing in the towel and buying a Mac.

Sorry to all of you in Texas, But Dell is JUNK!!! especially for graphics. Bought one a few years ago primarily for graphics, nothing but a crash-o-matic, and Dell was NO help. My laptop is a Prostar gaming computer with 2G of ram, runs flawlessly. Tried MAC, their nice, I just couldn't get my thinking work the opposite of what I've been used to for so many years. But, I have to say the mac wasnt't perfect either (none are). IMO, the bottom line is, minimum of 2G of ram or your going to run slow, mac or pc.

thats my 2cents.
