I want to tackle vintage pin-up. It's for me, it's for a new model I'm shooting with, and dogoneit, it's for the sheer fun of it. I want to create stuff like Dita Von Teese does. I want to shine at it.

So here's where you come in. HELP! I've been tinkering around and I've managed to make some photos look like they were shot on 60's film gone bad in the fridge, but I want good vintage stuff. When I look at it, I want to have a strong urge to drink martinis and listen to Linda Ronstadt sing the old stuff. You know the stuff like Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.

So, how do I do it? I need any advice I can get here. Lighting, post-production, what music to play. Can you help? So far the magic formula seems locked up tighter than the recipe for the Colonel's chicken.

Oh, and here's the kicker: I'm going to say "pretty please with sugar on top and whipped cream and a cherry."

Greg

Are you referring to something like this?

But maybe in Black and White?

Now that's what I'm talking about. Absolutely brilliant. I expect to be able to pan sideways and see that RCA dog.

I'm even wanting to take some of my photos even further, althougth I am not sure yet what that means (maybe even flatter and more plasticky). I think I might even edge towards the "painted" look, but some of that can surely be done post if I get things right up front. Oh, and those over the top colours.

Ok, buddy ol' pal. Mind sharing your formula here?

Greg

This particular shot was done with two lights. One on a boom and behind her and one large softbox in front of her and to her right just a bit.

Post processing - a bit of level adjustments and softning and sharpening.

One thing I did when shooting pinup style was to use Efke Film. It's pretty much brand new film the way they used to make it 50+ years ago. If you're shooting digital, when you convert to b&w bring down the reds a little first. Old film didn't respond to red as well. To compensate have the model use slightly darker lipstick than normal. Watch out for the "bride-of-frankenstein" look though. Look at a lot of vintage pics and pick out what you like. Use ebay to get a couple of nice vintage pieces of lingerie, bathing suits what ever. Be warned on bullet bras. For this shoot I looked into repro bullet bras and they be a bit expensive. It also helped that I was bad at lighting at the time. A lot of pinup pics were taken with nothing more than a handle mount flash. In the pic below I used two small (18") softboxes in a 1:2 ratio and I had a snooted head adding some hairlight. It helps to have a classicly shaped model too. Look for D cups on a girl that can wear a size 6-8. A cheeky theme can also help. A martini shaker, pen and paper, riding crop, it's all in the old Bettie Page shots. Here's a couple:

Oh yeah, retro pinups were also really into legs. Show them off!

First I converted my photo to B&W using the Imaging Factory Plug In. I then used B&W filter action I have that allows me to pick the different styles of B&W such as Palladium, Van Dyck, Silver Gelatin and a few others then I adjusted brightness and contrast until I had what I liked then I added some vignette.
