I ordered my new camera (Rebel 350D) and it came with a tripod. I have really never used one but I read that its a good idea with a medium telephoto lens to prevent camera shake. However, I shoot the vast majority of my photos vertically. Since the tripod mounts and makes the camera sit horizontally, how do you work this? Also, with the 350D (as with most SLRs) you have to look thru the viewfinder insted of seeing a preview on the screen, how do you look thru the viewfinder while the camera is titled sideways?

Any advice would be great, thanks.

First, you look through the viewfinder when the camera is tilted the same way you do when it isnt....With your eye.

I own 3 different tripods and a monopod. I use them fairly often but not usually for very long. I use them alot more when I am shooting portraits then I do when I am working with a model. I just dont like to be tied down while I am shooting. If I am using my 70-200 I will tend to use the tripod or monopod more then if I am shooting with a prime lens.

I'm so good, I can even look through the viewfinder with the camera upside down! It's amazing, I should be in a show.

LOL. I know that. What I mean is first off, all of the info like ap, shutter speed etc..is at the bottom and tilted sidewyas is a little hard to read. Second, its a bit odd holding it sideways since its a small camera and its just a weird angle. I got a 70-300mm lens for it and was told I should be using a tripod with it, just wanted to see what you guys do.

Most tripods that are intended for still photography purposes (as opposed to those that are used by video cameras) have three movements (often known as 3-way heads):

1. horizontal, in a full circle
2. vertical, where you can point the camera down, or point it up, and
3. rotating the camera 90 degrees so that instead of a horizontal image, the camera, turned on its side, see a vertical slice of reality.

Does your tripod not have a handle or a flip switch or something that will let the camera tilt over to the left (most likely) or right?

As far as the viewfinder goes... if you're not having any problem seeing through the viewfinder when you hand-hold the camera vertical, you shouldn't have any more problems when the camera is mounted on a tripod.

As far as you original question.. how often do you use a tripod? Take a look at my portfolio here on Garage Glamour... The vast majority of them were taken with a tripod mounted camera... I handhold probably less than 1/3 of the time I'm shooting.

I love my tripods! They make me a better photographer!

I invested in a two battery pack for my rebel and It helps with vertical shooting A LOT!
Not only because I have more to hold on to but because it has a second set of controls and shutter release keeping everything where it feels like it ought to be.
I don't think it will help you read sideways though.

I got the PM about the wedding. I replied twice. Is that what you're asking about?

I rarely use a tripod, but some people prefer it. I kind of like to move the camera around. However, if you're going to use that particular lens indoors and without strobes, you might want to think about the tripod. That lens isn't really sharp until you stop it down to about f8.

Here's a recent sideways shot. Shot in manual so there wasn't much reading of the display involved.
