I have a feeling on this forum the opinions will be pro 20D. Thats a good thing but so is the D70. Have you looked on DPReviw.com yet? Both are used by the pros. Andy McFarland uses the 20D and Andy Pearlman uses the D70. Outside of changing your name to Andy for uber-results, either cam is highly capable. Good luck with your choice.

i'm a canon guy. when i switched to digital a couple of years ago i went with the 10d and have been happy with the results. i'm about to upgrade to a 20d and retire my 10d to backup status. of course, there's that mamiya medium format that's coming... $12k but worth it IMO. it's all about money, tho. if i can justify the mamiya i'll go with it... but i'm thinking i'll probly be going with the canon.

I'm not sure its a fair comparison. The 20D's instant on, 8mp vs 6mp, and things like that put the two cameras in different camps. I use the 20D and find it gives fantastic results. But I found that the 10D gave fantastic results also and it was only a 6mp camera. It sort of depends on what set of lens you already have when deciding which to buy. Having used both cameras, however, I would always go with the 20D, because I beleive the controls are much better laid out, so it is easier to use.

Tim,

Canon people (not all but some) you'll discover, are a lot like your basic right wing political types, they pile into any discussion about cameras insisting that THEIR gear, and ONLY their gear is the pro standard. They will quote you chapter and verse regarding ISO and in camera sharpening and encrypted white balance and blah-de-blah-de-blah.

End of the day you can get pro level shots out of either camera. I happily shoot my two D-70's day in and day out, I get paid, my work appears in magazines & newspapers regularly --I'm proud of my work-- and I don't begrudge a single Canon shooter a single moment of time with their choice of gear.

Bottom line for you, which camera can you get in your hands sooner? You're not going to become a genius shooter overnight with either Canon or Nikon or Fuji or any other brand you're going to become a genius shooter by SHOOTING.

If you can buy the D-70 first why on earth would you wait an extra second?

Me I'd rather be shooting.

Best of luck with your choice,

Shannon

Not to be a 'right wing' Canon nut (actually I'm more libertarian) Looked at the Canon Rebel XT? 8meg .2sec start up...CMOS sensor.. cheaper ($835 (body only)at B&H I think). Its my back up to my 20D...just a suggestion.

Watch the stuff on eBay - a lot of grey market/imported for the D70. Meaning no US warranty and no service by Nikon [ever]. Like you I've been watching the D70/D70s eBay offerings and have been asking a lot of questions. They will grudgingly tell it's an import but then try to sell you an extended [in-house] warranty [repair].

B&H may have the best reputable price right now at $780 {body only].

FWIW
