In printing with my printer (Epson Stylus Photo 1280) I seem to get a green cast in areas transitioning from highlight to shadow. It really gets on my nerves and i always end up making close to fifty prints trying different ways to correct for it, none of which ever really seem to work. So I decided to look it up see if I can figure out what it is, thought it could be chromatic aberration, but I don't see signs of it in the files. I don't know what it is, it almost looks like a type of stepping, maybe the printer can't handle the gradiant. Has anybody else ran into this problem? I took prints to Calumet Photo, nobody there knew what it could be for some reason, neither did the head of the photgraphy dept. at my local college. I figured someone has to have had the same problem, anybody, I'm going nuts. I've been having the problem for months.

I would say make sure your color balance, and levels are right for starters.

It sounds like the gammut may be out of what your printer can handle. Are you trying to print a black and white photo or a color photo? I found a long time ago with other printers that black and white photos always seem to have a greenish tinge to them especially in the areas that transitioned. That is why I use a pro lab to print my photos these days.

I'm printing color photos, and I've tried to convert them to b/w to see if they come out without the stepping and they still end up with it. My Levels look fine to me, I don't see any of it in my image on screen, my monitor is calibrated and I'm using the right profiles for the printer.

My bet with the b+w is that you're using color ink on glossy paper. My experience with the 1280 and b+w is that I ALWAYS get a color cast on glossy paper w/color ink.

For b+w I use matte paper and black only with very good results.

Now - the other issue - check your paper profiles. The 1280, in my experience, doesn't allow for a wide variety of papers. I use premium photo glossy with the ICM profile for color prints with good shadow results - not great, but passable.

Are you doing the CMYK conversions yourself or letting the printer do the conversions for you?

It sounds to me like the areas that are printing green might be out of gamut and your printer is trying to compensate. Try doing the CMYK conversions in your photo editing program, see if the green cast is showing on-screen and if it is then make a selection of the offending area and do a color balance there.
