Just got my Brewer-Cantelmo books today. Expensive and a bit of a wait but very impressive. And very heavy. Much heavier than I expected.

Now I know you always put your best stuff at the front but does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations about how else to arrange?

I do some glamour, some portraiture, lingerie, and a little fashion. And what about black and white images placed with the color?

Thoughts appreciated.

Your images should flow and compliment/contrast each other.

You should END your book on a strong image.

Also a lot of people recommend that a viewer never have to turn the book in order to see the image properly.

First of all I hope what you spent is commensurate with the images inside. If the book is worth more than your images it will send a red flag to any art director etc who is reviewing the book. It's like dressing (as we say here in Texas) a Bubba in a $2000 suit, or you can put great clothes on a dead body but all you can do is bury it.

With that said, your book should change depending on who you are showing it to. If you know an agency (and you should know what they want) is looking for a particular kind of shooter then slant your book that way for that interview. It's like going to interview for a job and you are just saying I am really artistic but what they wanted was a brain surgeon, then did you really put your best qualifications up againts their need?

I will say once more, in a different way, you have to have images that are above the quality of the book they are in.

IMO

adding to what Mike said...

make sure you're using your top of the line killer stuff, whatever that is for you. Better to have ten perfect shots in a book than fifty half assed with ten 'strategically' placed.

Fashion and glamour are two entirely different things. You're not selling them to the same people, don't mix them in the same book. (It took me a while to learn this one, but trust me, keep the lingerie shots AWAY from the senior portraits when you're sitting down with someone who may want to give you a job.)

Open strong. finish strong, Oh, and you should be strong in the middle, too. Your book or books are your resume, plain and simple.

One more thing:

In this day and age, if you don't have a website you can send them to once they've given you BACK your book, you're going to have a lot of trouble convincing people you're actually a working photographer. Your book can only advertise your skills while someone has it in their posession. Your website announces your skills, or lack thereof, 24/7.

Good luck,

Shannon

But Mike we just put a dead body Bubba in a $2000 suit and made him President. And wasn't he from Texas too? lol

I did get some extra pages for the book so I could have a second and third set of images grouped to show. The razor blades were a lot cheaper than their holder in this case. I figure more than 15 or 20 images is overwhelming anyway.

The website is a good idea though I truly believe unless that is done first rate it does more harm than good. Good web design is almost as rare as good glamour photography.

Thanks to all. I can always count on this forum for good advice.

For the flow you will want to have models looking towards the spine or straight on rather than off the page.

That's great advice. Now I can buy a cheap book.
