I had the 300d and the 20d...the Rebel XT is about halfway between the two, both in price and features.

I love both of them and would highly recommend the 20d, but I can't see how you would be unhappy with the XT. The one thing I did not like about it was that it is a little smaller in physical size than the 2 that I have.

Well, I don't know what you are comparing it to, but I started with just a consumer 5mp camera...when I saw the images the 6mp Digital Rebel produced, I was blown away!!!! The Digital SLR's in general blow away anything you can get from a non-slr digital camera. (IMHO)

The XT and the 20d are in the 8mp range, and have that extra bit of pixel info you may want when making prints, but the prints I made with the 300d still hold up with everything else in my book.

Don,
I bought my rebel back durring football season so its first gen, not the xt.
I looked long and hard at the xt as a second camera for the newspaper when it came out and concluded it wasn't worth the extra money for what I needed.
Yes the MP is bigger bit I can and have done 11x17 slick prints with mine.
So unless you're really enlargiong a small portion of the picture (which I have had to do too) its kind of overkill for me.
2nd. I do a lot of sports photography with mine and the XT is WAY slower and has to stop to write sooner.
I only get 2.5fps and can get up to six shots before writing (shooting for newspaper print) if I remember correctly the XT is like 3fp but stopps to write at about the same total file size as my camera.
And I have big hands...big meaty, size 18 ring finger hands and after holding the XT I ruled it out completely as an every day shooter.
So, now I'm looking for deals on the 1st gen so I can get a back up and 2 more lenses instead of the XT.
I need a second camera in the office that everyone can use before I need a D for personal use.
Hope this helps
But I know you're going to do what you want to anyway...
Jack

Actually no Jackell..this time Im going to do whats smart..I shoot with a fuji s20 Pro..intergral lens.... I dont want to spend 1000.00 if the image quality isnt much better than what Im already getting... and unlike you I have very small hands ring size 7 1/2- 8... so I dont think I want lug around a huge camera that doesnt fit my hands very well...I shot a couple of images with someones Fuji S1 and it was like frikkin huge to me.... I just want the best quality images I can get for my buck.
Don.

We are all different... But I know that when I hold a camera I want to feel like I am holding something... I am used to bigger heavier camera's so even when I grab my friends 10D without the battery grip on it if feels too small....

Great AF speeds on it but you feel like your going to break it every time its in your hand, although sturdy not quite as solid a camera construction as say a 20d.

And the 18-55 lens... well, it makes a great paper weight as well, look into body only or the 17-85 3.5 lens that you can get with it also has received great reviews.
