Where can I find the translucent fabric for my home built screens for use in outdoor shoots? I want to build my own frame and then buy the fabric to go over it.

Thanks,

Herb

Are you talking for light diffusion outdoors? I bought some fabric, although not totally translucent but it seems to work, at Wal-Mart. I haven't tried it outdoors, though, just in the studio through strobes.

Most fabric stores carry ripstop nylon in white. It's about 60 inches wide and costs about $4 a yard. I built two 4x6 foot scrims out of 1/2 inch electrical conduit and used ripstop as the fabric. Total cost was about $40 I think.

I admit it, I'm a fabric adict. I can't walk into a Fabric store or Wal-mart without checking out the remnants bin. I've seen some translucent rip-stop nylom in a local fabric store that looked interesting but I'm not sure how the grid pattern would look in direct sun, it might show on some cases.

I've made several scrims but frankly, I really prefer the ones from Photoflex that go on their Lite Panels. I've not run across that kind of fabric in a store though I'll bet you can find it on the web if you hunt. B&H has the silks separately here. You can make frames with 1" (I think) PVC pipe and shock cord. The Photoflex T-Clamps are pretty useful in general too.

You can buy some really nice satin reflector material in fabric stores and it is translucent but as a scrim it's nothing special. When I need a BIG scrim, I use a 10'x15' piece of white muslin; but it needs direct sun or a bank of strobes behind it to pass enough light.

Hope this helps a little.

For simple diffusion, I have found that several layers of tulle (the fairly open netting in the bridal section) work as well as or even better than a single layer of nylon. You lose less light, and it's just as soft. Plus, it's under a dollar a yard at 45" wide.
